5 Comfort Food Tips and Food that Travels Menu #SundaySupper

There are many reasons that we make food that travels. Sometimes we are taking it to a vacation house, and sometimes we are heading to a potluck party. Still other times, we are cooking for friends or family in need. Many of you have been part of a group that provides food for a family coping with serious illness or death, or for the parents of a newborn just too tired to make dinner.

It’s always nice to know someone is thinking about us, and even better when special thought has been paid to the food delivery. For instance, you aren’t helping much if you drop off a basket of raw ingredients. The goal is to make things easier, not make work. Here are five comfort food tips to help you, help them:

1. It may seem thoughtful to quiz the recipients about their likes and dislikes, but it’s not. It adds to their burden. If you don’t know what they like, talk to someone who knows them better.

2. Keep it simple. Who doesn’t love chicken soup? This is not the time to show off what you learned at that molecular gastronomy seminar.

3. Think about the entire meal and make enough for leftovers. If you are bringing a casserole, don’t forget a salad and dessert. If it’s a green salad, pack dressing separately so the greens don’t get soggy. You can’t be sure when the recipients will eat or if they are actually eating at the same time.

4. Deliver food in disposable containers or ones that the recipient can keep. Somebody who is sick or preoccupied with challenges doesn’t need to worry about returning your dishes and pans.

5. This may sound sort of cruel, but don’t plan on staying for a visit. The house might be a mess. Showers might not have been taken. Call to say you are coming (or maybe the drop off is orchestrated already) and hand the food off at the door. Your job is to provide comfort, not to make someone in need feel like they have to tidy the house.
