Who says you have to be at the stadium to tailgate? Sure, the party name comes from sitting on the open gate of a pickup truck and chowing down in the parking lot. But anymore, a tailgate party is anywhere football fans are gathered. Really, the only requirements are a TV and big table to set out all the food.

Today, Sunday Supper is partnering with Gallo Family Vineyards to pair a variety of its mini-bottles with tasty game-day fare. As we tested recipes, we found there’s a wine to go with everything. Moscato with spicy food. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with anything beefy. All manner of chicken wings find an amiable teammate in Chardonnay. And the smaller serving bottles ensure everyone gets what they want.

Use these easy tailgate food tips to put on a championship party … in your own backyard or living room.

No penalty. There’s no loss of yardage (or face) for using convenience products. Store-bought BBQ sauces, cheese spreads, interesting condiments, salsas, brownie mixes and pre-cooked shrimp can help speed along the preparation process. Don’t feel guilty.

Strengthen the O-Line. The best party offense is a good defense. Plan ahead and make lists. Do you have everything covered? Drinks, appetizers, main dish, sweets? Plates, cups and napkins? Something for vegetarians? Something for folks on a diet? True, you can’t be all things to all guests but if you have a plan you’ll be in game-ready shape.

The playbook. Consider the time of the game when devising the menu. Most football games last at least three hours. So, if it’s an 8 p.m. start, plan on having food ready before kickoff. People will be hungry and some might leave at halftime if it’s a work/school night. Is it an 11 a.m. start? Consider a brunch menu.

Halftime show. Back in the day, the halftime entertainment was televised, but no longer do we see the marching bands or cheerleading routines. Halftime is now full of analysis from TV commentators and former players, plus highlights of other games. Get your crowd on its feet with a game of cornhole or horseshoes in the backyard, or some other activity to stretch their legs (and work off those nachos).

Touchdown! Don’t put the food out and forget it. Do an occasional sweep to make sure the food area is clean and bowls are replenished. If something is empty, remove the container. Make sure there is a trash receptacle visible for guests. Hot food should stay hot and cold food cold. Set up drinks separately from food so that there’s not a jam up in either area. Enlist your kids to police dirty cups and plates.
