The best biscuits and gravy recipe is the kind you make from scratch! This is a classic country breakfast, brunch, or even breakfast for dinner (it’s one of my favorite Sunday Dinner Ideas). There is nothing like creamy gravy served over top fresh biscuits.
You can even make Instant Pot Sausage Gravy using this easy recipe!
🧈 Ingredients
The best part about making your own southern sausage gravy is that it uses just a few simple ingredients you may already have most of in your pantry.
- butter
- milk
- flour
- maple syrup
- steak seasoning
- salt and pepper
- garlic powder
- sage breakfast sausage
What makes this sausage gravy recipe extra special is the use of sage sausage, maple syrup, and steak seasoning! You won’t believe how flavorful this dish is!
🧂 Seasoning
Sage sausage and a little bit of maple syrup give the gravy a sweeter flavor. Using steak seasoning along with simple salt and pepper and garlic powder adds an unexpected kick that’ll leave you craving bite after bite!
I personally love the extra spice adding red pepper flakes gives my gravy. You might consider adding it when it’s done cooking just in case not everyone in your household does! It works just as well when you add it after.
🥘 How to Make Biscuits and Gravy
To make this easy biscuits and gravy, follow these simple instructions. I included some step-by-step photos and a video to make it easier, too!
Sausage gravy uses a bechamel sauce formed by making a roux. It is so creamy and delicious.
How to Make Sausage Gravy
- Add sage sausage to a large skillet over high heat. Break up and brown the sausage in the skillet.
- Stir in butter. Mix it in well until it melts.
- Add flour and stir until you can’t see the flour anymore.
- Gradually add milk and stir well. Let it cook a minute or two.
- Slowly add more milk and stir well.
- Let it cook another minute or so, then add maple syrup and a pinch of pepper, plus Chicago steak seasoning and garlic powder. Add salt to taste.
- Allow it to bubble and thicken until it reduces into a thick gravy. When you can move it around in the pan with your spatula or wooden spoon and it’s so thick it takes a bit to spread back, you know it’s ready!

How to Make Biscuits for Sausage Gravy
You can save yourself time by using ready-made biscuit dough. I like making air fryer biscuits topped with garlic butter, myself! They’re crispy but fluffy, take just 6 minutes to make, and are so buttery and delicious.
If you go with oven-baked biscuits, make sure you preheat your oven according to package directions and get those biscuits cooking before you start making your gravy.
That way, when the gravy is done, you won’t have to wait for the biscuits to be ready before you enjoy your meal!
Can I make sausage gravy the night before?
Yes, absolutely! Actually, I recommend you make this recipe the night before as the flavor will intensify by the next day. Just heat it up in the morning on low in a saucepan.
Sausage gravy can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.

The Instant Pot method doesn’t mention the garlic powder! Do you leave it out? If not, when do you add it? I didn’t notice it until I was manually copying over the IP method into Copy Me That. It’s Fathers Day, so I can’t wait for an answer, so I will leave it out and taste it at the end for now, or just get brave and try the stovetop. Big decision! Thank you!!! He will be so excited!!!

Hi Lyndsay! Thank you so much for your question. I apologize for the confusion! It was meant to be in the Instant Pot recipe as well, but somehow was left out. We will add it in – thank you for pointing that out for us. How did it work out for you? Did you use the Instant Pot or cook it on the stove? This is one of my personal favorites and I think it tastes so amazing! I bet it was good even without the garlic powder, if you didn’t wind up using it. I hope you both enjoyed it and had a fantastic day!
