Why You’ll Love Garlic Parmesan Wing Sauce
If you’ve ever been to Buffalo Wild Wings, you’ve probably had their trademark Garlic Parmesan chicken wings. I certainly have, and as soon as I tasted them, I knew I had to make my own!
Overnight, this garlic Parmesan cheese sauce became a family favorite at my house. You just can’t get better than the savory taste of Parmesan cheese and aromatic garlic all mixed together with rich, creamy melted butter! Toss it in a bowl with your favorite wings and set them out on game day. They won’t last long, I promise!
Of course, garlic Parmesan wings is only one way to enjoy a sauce this good. If you’ve got spare, why not pour it over salads or pasta? You can even pour it over your favorite protein like steak or pork chops; with a mixture of flavors like this, you can’t go wrong!
Ingredients
- Butter: You can use salted or unsalted butter, but if you use unsalted, add 1 teaspoon kosher salt.
- Parmesan cheese: Freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano will have the best flavor!
- Fresh parsley: You can use dried, but fresh parsley has the softest texture and best color.
- Granulated garlic: You can also use minced garlic, but it will have a stronger, spicier flavor. Choose whichever you prefer!
- Black pepper: Freshly ground black pepper is ideal, with great bite and flavor!
- Salt: If you’re using salted butter, leave out the extra salt!
- Optional: Red pepper flakes, lemon juice, oregano, basil, onion powder

How to Make Garlic Parmesan Wing Sauce
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat. You want to start at a low heat so none of the ingredients burn and the flavors and consistency have time to develop.
- Add the salt, pepper, garlic, and minced fresh parsley into the melted butter, as well as any optional seasonings, and stir well to combine the mixture completely.
- Add the grated Parmesan and remove from the heat. It’s important you take the sauce off of the heat after adding the Parmesan to mix the dairy through evenly.
- Brush it on crispy wings or use as a dip, and enjoy! There are so many ways to serve this garlic Parmesan sauce that you really can’t go wrong.
Tips
- If you plan to smoke the wings or continue baking them with the sauce added, use granulated garlic. Fresh garlic will burn at high temperatures and get bitter. You do not want to eat burnt garlic, trust me!
- I highly recommend grating your own Parmesan! It’s so much better than pre-grated cheese, especially in a sauce like this. You can also use Pecorino Romano, but it will have a slightly different flavor.
- You can apply this sauce partway through the cook time of the wings, or use it as a dipping sauce.

FAQ
If you’re adding the sauce to the wings before cooking them, use powdered garlic so it doesn’t burn and turn bitter. For a dipping sauce or a sauce you’ll toss finished wings in, you can safely use fresh garlic.
Thanks to the nature of this sauce, it’s ideal for dipping, brushing, or tossing! However, it is a very thin sauce, so I recommend dipping breaded wings in it to ensure there’s plenty of crust for the sauce to cling to. It will also start to harden as it sits out, so use it fresh or don’t let it sit out too long.
Storing Leftover Parmesan Garlic Sauce
- Refrigerator: Because this is a simple butter sauce, this sauce hardens up in the fridge. Store it in an airtight container that can be heated up or run under hot water to loosen it. It will keep for 4-5 days.
- Freezer: You can freeze this easy sauce for later, or even use it on pasta and other recipes! My favorite way to store butter sauce is in an ice cube tray. Once frozen, pop the sauce cubes into a freezer-safe bag to store for up to 4 months.
- Thawing and Reheating: To thaw frozen sauce, set it in the fridge overnight. For reheating, place the sauce in a pan and heat over medium-low heat until hot and bubbly.
