Mexican Guacamole Recipe
When I sit down at my favorite Mexican restaurant, I confess that my first thought isn’t about the meal I’m about to order. It’s that big bowl of warm tortilla chips and freshly made, irresistible guacamole!
However, the best guacamole is homemade! Using the freshest ingredients and adjusting the flavors to your liking, homemade guacamole becomes a stellar side dish. It’s so tasty I often find myself digging in with a spoon before my homemade tortilla chips are done!
Guacamole is for more than just chip-dipping, though. My chunky guacamole recipe is versatile – it’s a perfect addition to tacos, an excellent topping for chicken, a refreshing mix-in for salads, or a complement to just about any dish you can dream up. (See my suggestions above the recipe card!)
The rich texture of homemade guacamole, featuring buttery avocado, crisp vegetables, and succulent tomatoes, makes it a great side dish every time!
Guacamole Ingredients
- Avocado
- Corn
- Red Onion
- Grape Tomatoes
- Jalapeño
- Fresh Cilantro
- Lime Juice
- Red Pepper Flakes
- Sea Salt
Don’t be afraid to simplify! A simple guacamole recipe just needs avocado, lime, tomato, and onion. Add more ingredients to your tastes!
How to Make Guacamole Salsa
- Dice the avocados into small cubes, then dice the tomatoes, red onion, and cilantro. Discard the seeds from the jalapeno and mince the pepper, making sure to wear gloves.
- Add all the ingredients to a large bowl. Gently stir to combine without mashing to maintain the chunky texture. For smoother guacamole, mash with a fork to your preference.
- Serve with tortilla chips or your dinner of choice, and enjoy!
How long does Guacamole last?
Guacamole lasts three to four days in the fridge, so it’s best eaten quickly. To preserve it for the longest, cover the surface tightly with plastic wrap to prevent air from touching the surface and browning it. Here’s how to store guacamole:
- Fridge: Guacamole is best when fresh, but can be stored in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days in an airtight container. To keep it from turning brown, cover the surface of the guacamole in a layer of plastic wrap to prevent air from touching it.
- Freezer: Guacamole can also be frozen. Wrap it very tightly in plastic wrap in a freezer-safe container to ensure no air comes into contact with it, then freeze for up to 3 months. Just be aware, it will lose some of its texture and flavor when thawed.
- Thawing: Thaw in the refrigerator or on the counter, covered. Do not heat; avocado becomes mushy when heated.
Homemade Guacamole Recipe Tips
- Fresh, ripe avocados make all the difference! Ensure the avocados are bright green in the center and that there’s a little give when squeezed.
- Adjust the spice level by using more or less jalapenos. You can even swap them out for Serrano peppers or remove them entirely and simply add a sprinkle of cayenne.
- Fresh lime juice has a much better flavor than bottled juice, and I highly recommend using it in a simple recipe like this.
- Customize the flavor by adding chili powder, smoked paprika, or sauteed garlic.
Chunky Guacamole FAQ
Guacamole can be chunky or smooth, depending on your preference. I like to start with chunky guacamole, and then mash it to my preference in the bowl. But there’s no wrong way to serve guacamole! Test both and see which texture you prefer.
Smooth vs. chunky guacamole describes to what level the avocado has been mashed. For smooth guacamole, the avocado is very well mashed into a smooth paste, with the only lumps being onions and peppers. For chunky, the avocado is left in cubes without mashing.
