Homemade Tortilla Chips
Making your own tortilla chips is so easy and fun! My recipe for homemade tortilla chips is a family favorite that brings everyone together. With just a handful of ingredients, you can create wonderfully crispy tortilla chips from tortillas in no time. It’s perfect for those who love a good salty snack without the guilt of fried food later!
I remember the first time I tried making chips at home with my kids. We had a blast cutting the tortillas into wedges and watching them turn golden-brown. Now, with an air fryer, it’s even easier and more wholesome than traditional frying methods. Just a spray of olive oil and a pinch of salt, and this tortilla chip recipe comes out perfectly crispy every time!
What’s fantastic about this recipe is its versatility—whether you’re a fan of corn or flour tortillas, both work beautifully. In just 5-7 minutes in the air fryer, you get these perfectly air-fried tortilla chips that are just waiting to be dipped into your favorite salsa or guacamole. I guarantee you’ll love them!
Air Fried Tortilla Chips Ingredients
- Small Tortillas (Taco Size, Corn Or Flour)
- Olive Oil Spray, Or Avocado Oil Spray
- Pinch Of Coarse Salt, More To Taste
How to Make Tortilla Chips in the Air Fryer
- Brush or spray both sides of each tortilla with oil.
- Sprinkle salt on one side, or both sides if you prefer extra salty chips.
- Cut each tortilla into six wedges.
- Arrange the wedges in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
- Air fry at 350°F for 5-7 minutes. Check them once or twice during cooking to ensure they are not overlapping and shake the basket if needed.
Note: I’m using my Our Place air fryer here. I love it!
Tortilla Chips in Air Fryer Tips
- No need to preheat: You don’t have to preheat your air fryer to make these chips.
- Single layer is a must: Place the tortillas in a single layer to ensure they cook evenly. Cook in batches, if necessary, to avoid overlapping.
- For thicker tortillas: If you use thicker tortillas, they may need an extra minute or two. Adjust the cooking time accordingly.
- Coat with oil: Use a spray or brush to coat the tortillas with a light amount of oil, but don’t use too much! The oil helps in achieving an even golden color and crispiness.
- Try other flavor variations: Experiment with different seasonings like chili powder, garlic powder, or lime zest for a flavor twist.
- Separate any sticking chips: Check on the chips halfway through the cook time and shake the basket if needed to separate any that are sticking together.
- Don’t let them burn: Keep an eye on the chips in the last few minutes of air frying to prevent them from burning.
- Let them cool first: Let the chips cool for a few minutes after cooking. They will crisp up more as they cool.
- Using less oil: For a lower-calorie version, use less oil or a calorie-free cooking spray. You can also try using whole wheat or low-carb tortillas.
Storing Homemade Tortilla Chips
Place leftovers in an airtight container, such as a resealable plastic bag, at room temperature (no need to refrigerate).
How to Reheat Tortilla Chips in Air Fryer
If the chips lose their crispness, reheat them in the air fryer at 350°F for 1-2 minutes to refresh their texture. Homemade tortilla chips last up to about a week before they start to go stale.
What to Serve with Tortilla Chips
- Fresh Tomato Salsa
- Guacamole
- Queso Blanco, Chorizo Cheese Dip, or Cheese Sauce
- Mexican Street Corn Dip
- Hummus
Homemade tortilla chips pair with more than just dips. Try them alongside main course meals, such as Slow Cooker Carnitas, or cracked over salads!
Common Problems for Air Frying Tortilla Chips
- Chips Not Crispy Enough: This can happen if the chips are overcrowded in the basket. This can also lead to uneven cooking. Make sure not to overlap any of the tortilla wedges.
- Chips Burning: Tortilla chips can burn quickly. Check on them if you aren’t sure about the timing of your air fryer.
- Oil Usage: Using too much oil can make the chips greasy, while not using enough might make them dry and less flavorful.
- Seasoning Isn’t Right: Over or under-seasoning can affect the flavor. It’s important to season evenly and adjust to your tastes.
- Stale Chips: If not stored properly in an airtight container, the chips can quickly become stale. Make sure to store them in a resealable bag or container with a tight lid.
FAQ for Making Tortilla Chips in Air Fryer
Corn tortillas or flour tortillas may both be used for this recipe. Corn tortillas offer a more traditional chip texture, while flour tortillas are softer and slightly chewy. Try both and pick your favorite!
I like to use a pizza cutter to easily cut tortillas into wedges. A regular sharp knife works as well, although you can also use kitchen scissors if necessary.
Rather than using a fine table salt, I recommend using a coarse salt such as sea salt flakes or kosher salt.
Isabel’s Air Fryer
It’s amazing what you can cook with an air fryer! I love mine and highly recommend it. It even has a steaming function to re-hydrate stale bread!
