Tools to Make Instant Pot Goulash
- Your Instant Pot. I use an 8-quart Instant Pot, but a 6-quart should work just fine, too.
Goulash Instant Pot Recipe Ingredients
- Ground beef: You can use any type of ground beef! I tend to use lean ground beef, as it lets me skip draining the fat. But if you want, you can use higher fat ratios- it's a great way to save money.
- Salt and pepper: Use freshly cracked black pepper and a nice flaky kosher salt for the best flavor. Yes, it really does make a difference!
- Dry minced onion: I like dried minced onion instead of fresh onion for ease, but you can also finely dice half a yellow onion if you want a little more onion flavor.
- Dry chives: Chives have a super unique flavor and onion-like spice that makes them delicious in goulash!
- Minced garlic: I recommend either fresh or jarred garlic to really bring in the flavor. You'll be sauteing it with the beef, so the flavor will mellow out.
- Butter: A little butter helps give the sauce a smooth and silky finish.
- Chicken broth: You can use water or a different broth if you prefer, but I highly recommend chicken broth. The salty, savory flavor infuses every bite of this dish with flavor and aroma.
- Dried Italian herbs: You can use a bottled mix, or make your own homemade seasoning blend- it's easy, I promise!
- Uncooked egg noodles: Egg noodles are my favorite for goulash as they have a richer flavor and more tender chew, but you can also use regular pasta. Elbow macaroni is a classic choice.
- Canned diced tomatoes: I like using diced tomatoes for those nice chunks of tomato, but you can also use tomato sauce! Pick your favorite depending on the texture you prefer.
- Optional:
- Hungarian Paprika: If you choose to make a more classic Hungarian goulash, add at least 2-3 tablespoons of good Hungarian paprika. It sounds like a lot, but it's the key flavor!
- Bay Leaves: Adding a bay leaf to the pot can add a nice herbal aroma.
- Soy Sauce: Adding a dash of soy sauce brings in a savory twist that deepens the flavor.
- More Vegetables: Adding in green bell pepper, carrot, and any other hard veggies like rutabaga, turnip, or radish.

Notes
- If you want to thicken the sauce for your goulash a bit more, you can make a cornstarch slurry by mixing equal parts cornstarch and cold water, or add a light dusting of flour to the beef pieces before sauteing them.
- Try topping beef goulash with cheese after cooking. A cheesy addition is a great choice for serving kids! My favorite is shredded cheddar cheese.
- Fresh tomatoes can be used instead of canned diced tomatoes, if desired.
- You can reduce the amount of sodium by using low salt chicken broth.

Storage and Reheating
- Refrigerator: Store leftovers in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 4 days.
- Freezer: You can freeze goulash and it will reheat wonderfully! Freeze in serving-sized containers for up to 3 months.
- Thawing: Goulash can be thawed in the fridge overnight, or reheated directly from frozen in a saucepan or in the microwave. Add a little extra broth or water to ensure it doesn't dry out.
- Reheating: You can reheat goulash in the microwave or on the stove in a small saucepan. I recommend adding a little extra liquid, as the pasta will keep absorbing liquid as it rests.
