Italian Seasoning Recipe
I use my homemade Italian seasoning recipe almost every day! This easy dried herb blend makes just about everything taste better, from Italian sandwiches to Chicken Alfredo. I even add it to oil and vinegar for an easy salad dressing, and my family loves it!
If you know me, you know I can’t rest until I’ve learned to make my own seasonings. You can buy store spice blends, of course, but nothing beats the flavor of homemade seasoning. For years I’ve experimented with the right blend of savory flavors to create this Italian seasoning recipe with the help of my taste-testers (my family!), so I know you’ll love it!
You can add it to everything and customize it to the exact flavors you prefer. Make a big batch – you’ll want to add it to everything!
What’s in an Italian seasoning mix?
Italian seasoning is a blend of herbs commonly found in Italian cuisine, like oregano and basil. Sold as a bottled mix, it’s a great way to add lots of flavor to a dish easily. But, you can also make it from scratch at home using simple pantry ingredients! My recipe for Italian seasoning is a classic blend using dried basil, dried oregano, dried rosemary, dried parsley, and dried thyme. You can also customize it with other ingredients. I’ll explain below!
Italian Seasoning Ingredients
- Dried basil: The classic for pizza, pasta, and more! This spice has a sweet, savory, and mildly peppery flavor.
- Dried oregano: With a very strong, aromatic flavor, this herb is one of the most iconic to Italian food. It’s so flavorful, you can use it in place of a full mix in a pinch.
- Dried rosemary: With a strong flavor almost akin to spruce or pine, this herb can’t be missed. I recommend dicing rosemary into smaller pieces if used as a sprinkled on seasoning.
- Dried parsley: Parsley has a mild, fresh flavor akin to cilantro, but without the distinctive flavor that can make cilantro distasteful to some people.
- Dried thyme: One of the most classic of Italian herbs, with a sharp, floral flavor.
- Optional: Marjoram, sage, garlic powder, red chili flakes
How to Make Italian Seasoning
1: Mix Seasonings
Place all the ingredients in a small bowl and mix well. You can use a fork or a whisk to mix. If you want to add any extra seasonings, go ahead and do that now.
2: Store or Use
Add the seasonings to a small jar or other airtight container, and store it ina cool and dry location such as your pantry with your other spices. Stored properly, this Italian seasoning mix can last pretty much indefinitely. This blend makes about 9 Tablespoons of seasoning, which should last you quite a few meals!
Italian Herb Seasoning Tips
- Feel free to mix up the proportions to your tastes! If you love rosemary, add more to the mix. Looking for spice? Add in some red chili flakes!
- If you’re really in a pinch, you can use equal parts basil and oregano or thyme for a very basic seasoning.
- For a more complex flavor, add in a teaspoon of Marjoram or ground sage!
Isabel’s Top Tip
There are tons of great ways to use this seasoning. Try adding it to vinegar and olive oil for Italian dressing, sprinkle it on roasted veggies, top a sandwich with it, or sprinkle it over popcorn!
Italian Spice Recipe FAQ
If you’re really short on herbs, you can use just basil, oregano, and/or thyme. Mixing any combination of these three essential herbs together can result in a passable Italian seasoning for most recipes. Of course, adding more herbs makes for a fuller flavor!
How to Store Homemade Italian Spices
- Pantry: Because the ingredients are all dry, it can easily be stored in the pantry in a tightly sealed jar or airtight container! You can add a preservation packet (such as the ones found in dry snack bags) if desired. It lasts for roughly up to 2 years.
- Freezer: Another great way to preserve the flavor of herbs is to freeze them! Just pour the seasoning into a spice jar or plastic bag, then place it in the freezer. It’s pretty much never going to go bad!
