My copycat Chick-fil-A Chicken Tortilla Soup recipe is even better than the original! It’s a creamy tortilla soup using two kinds of beans, corn, and green chiles, all topped off with tortilla strips. This is one homemade chicken tortilla soup recipe that will make you want to lick the bowl clean – the reviews speak for themselves!
Perfect soup. Hands down. My husband and I argue over the leftovers. Love this!

Chick-fil-A Tortilla Soup Recipe
I’m not exaggerating when I tell you this is better than the chicken tortilla soup Chick-fil-A makes! It’s just like the original recipe, but as a homemade tortilla soup, tastes even better. Just like my copycat Chick-fil-A Chicken Noodle!
Even better? It takes under an hour to make. Yup, under an hour! This is a quick, budget-friendly, and easy chicken tortilla soup recipe that will have you thinking twice about stopping at the drive thru!
I made this tonight! It was great!!! I made two pots…one with chicken. And the other pot without chicken for my vegans. Everyone loved it!! It’s a keeper!

Chicken Tortilla Soup Chick-fil-A Ingredients
- Olive Oil: You will need a little olive oil for sauteing the onions and garlic.
- Onion: Use a yellow sweet onion, medium in size. You can also use white onion. Avoid red onion, though!
- Garlic: You can mince your own garlic or use garlic paste.
- Seasoning: The seasoning in this soup is a blend of cumin, dried oregano, and sea salt.
- Beans: We’re using two types of beans for this dish, so you’ll need a can of cannellini beans and a can of black beans.
- Diced Tomatoes with Green Chiles: Canned, such as Rotel brand. I often use the more budget-friendly store brand and it works great!
- Corn: We’re using creamed corn in addition to whole kernel corn for this dish, so you will need one can of both.
- Shredded Chicken: I make my own pulled chicken from scratch either by using 4 chicken breasts (a perfect amount for this soup) or by roasting a whole chicken, but you can also use store-bought rotisserie chicken. Let it cool enough to handle before you shred it.
- Lime Juice: Necessary to achieve that perfect flavor balance!
- Tortilla Strips: Or tortilla chips, for topping.
I’ve made it several times now, for my family and its an easy meal to prep and deliver to people who may need a little help at home! It’s definitely a requested favorite! Thank you!

Chick-fil-A Chicken Tortilla Soup Recipe
- Heat olive oil in a large soup pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add chopped medium yellow onion to the pot and saute with minced garlic until the onion softens and becomes translucent.
- Stir in cumin, dried oregano, and sea salt.
- Add cannellini beans (do not drain!) to a blender and puree. Reserve the remaining can of cannellini beans to add to the soup later for whole beans.
- Stir the pureed beans into the pot with the onion and garlic. Add diced tomatoes with green chiles, cream-style corn, and a can of corn to the pot. Do not drain any of the cans.
- Add deboned and shredded chicken from one whole roasted or rotisserie chicken to the pot.
- Mix in the remaining cannellini beans and black beans. Do not drain the cans of their liquid. Stir to combine.
- Let the soup simmer over medium heat until fully heated through, about 20 to 30 minutes. Add the juice of 1 lime and season to taste with salt and pepper. Top with tortilla strips to serve, and enjoy!
On winter nights at our house, it is always a toss-up between this soup and my chicken chili recipe! They are both so easy to prepare and so delicious!

Chick-fil-A Chicken Tortilla Soup Tips
- Do not drain any of the cans of their liquid in this recipe. If you drain the liquid, your creamy chicken tortilla soup will not have the right consistency.
- If you feel the soup is too thick, use low-sodium chicken broth to lighten it up.
- I love using leftover turkey during the holidays to make this recipe.
- If you want to spice things up, add a teaspoon of chili powder or taco seasoning.
“One of the best soups I’ve ever made! My husband and I love this recipe! Definitely a wonderful soup for a cold winter’s night! Thank you”

Slow Cooker Instructions
To make this soup in the slow cooker, use boneless skinless chicken breasts or thighs added at the start of the cooking time or add your already-cooked chicken about 30 minutes before the soup is finished.
Add all your soup ingredients as directed to the crockpot, then cook on low heat for 5-6 hours or until the chicken shreds easily.
What goes good with Chicken Tortilla Soup?
- Sliced avocado
- Tortilla strips, tortilla chips, or Fritos chips
- Sour cream
- Sliced jalapenos

Storing Chicken Tortilla Soup
- Let the soup cool down to room temperature.
- Put the soup in airtight containers or resealable bags.
- Store it in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or in the freezer for 2-3 months if you want to keep it longer. This soup freezes really well.

- If the soup is frozen, thaw it in the fridge first, then reheat as mentioned above.
- Taste and adjust the seasonings before serving.
- Add fresh garnishes like cilantro, avocado, cheese, or tortilla strips for extra flavor.

I tried making this recipe last night and OH MY GOSH, it is soooo close to the original! I do recommend adding some extra lime, chili powder and possibly some sour cream to get the spice and texture a tad bit closer to the original kick. But overall I was SO impressed with this recipe and make this recipe and i promise you will absolutely love it!

Thank you so much, Charity! We appreciate this comment so much and are SO glad you enjoyed the recipe! 💖

This was soooo delicious!!!! My dad had 3 bowls before I finished my first lol I made my own tortilla strips (tortillas brushed with veggie oil, comino, chili powder and salt). I can’t wait for the weather to get cold, I’ll be making this more often ❤️
Em Beitel says
Thank you so much, Gabriela! We’re so glad to hear you and your dad enjoyed it! We get the same way with this soup 🍲 and your homemade tortilla strips sound incredible!

So I live for October to March for chicken tortilla soup from Chick Fil-a. So sad that they would not put it on the Menu as a regular item. Until I found this recipe this is the second week in a row I have made it and it is a HUGE success in my house. Thank you so much for sharing it! I love spicy so added some chili powder and red pepper to taste. Thank you, Thank you!
Em Beitel says
Thank you so, so much Charlotte! We’re so glad you enjoyed it! The addition of chili powder and red pepper sounds amazing!

I am very excited to try this! I am wondering though… if the consistency will be the same as the original? Judging from the pictures it looks a bit more ‘brothy’. I already make something very similar with leftover crockpot chicken fajitas (green and red bell peppers, onion, chicken and fajita seasoning cooked about 6 hours till chicken is falling apart tender) then use leftovers and add corn, black beans, rotel, chicken broth, and a block of cream cheese. It is so good and I think probably very close to this! I might try following this recipe to a t but then add the cream cheese. Will report back!!! 😉
Em Beitel says
We can’t wait to hear how it goes, Jennifer! We’ve gotten great feedback about the consistency of the soup and its similarity to Chick-fil-A’s. We’re super proud of this soup and can’t wait for you to try it! Thank you so much for your comment!

Robyn says
This recipe was delicious and had a nice thick & creamy base. I like tortilla soup to be a bit spicier so I added a diced jalapeno, chili powder, and some cayenne. It gave it the punch I was looking for. Leftovers heat up nicely as well! Great time save by using the rotisserie chicken!
Em Beitel says
Robyn, those additions sound delicious! We’re so glad you enjoyed it! This is one of our all-time favorites. Thank you for sharing with us!
Angie says
I have everything I need to make this except the Rotisserie chicken. Can I use Tyson Grilled & Ready chicken breast strips?
Em Beitel says
Hi Angie! Absolutely, that should work just fine. It won’t have quite the same texture or flavor as using rotisserie chicken, but that should work well and the soup will be delicious. Hope you enjoy!
Sam says
I just finished making this soup and not only was it super easy and fast, it is also so delicious! I’ve already eaten two bowls and printed this recipe out because it is hands-down a keeper!
