Potatoes on the Grill are totally irresistible! Seasoned potatoes grilled to golden-brown, crispy perfection make the perfect side dish. Serve them with your favorite steaks, chicken, pork, and more. Ready in 40 minutes!
Grilled Potatoes
No matter what I’m grilling, I know that it has to be paired with a big batch of crispy, tender grilled potatoes. They’re the perfect grilling side dish: crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, and really easy to make, too!
Honestly, these grilled potatoes tend to disappear before the main course. With such a simple and versatile seasoning, they pair with just about everything from chicken and pork to beef, ribs, and burgers. You can’t go wrong!
These potatoes on the grill were so easy to prepare and so tasty. I make this every time we grill!

Grill Russet Potatoes Ingredients
- Russet Potatoes: Personally, I tend to use russet potatoes for grilling, but the type of potato is up to you! I’ve also used Yukon Gold potatoes and red potatoes and had great success. Just watch the cook time; smaller, softer potatoes will cook faster.
- Garlic Powder: You will want to use garlic powder, not fresh garlic. It has a nice mild flavor, and most importantly, won’t burn like fresh garlic will!
- Sea Salt: My favorite salt to use is Maldon sea salt flakes. Kosher salt will also work great. Just make sure it’s a nice flaky salt to add a delectable crunch to every bite.
- Black Pepper: Freshly ground black pepper adds distinctive heat. It’s all that’s needed to make these roast potatoes utterly irresistible!
- Olive Oil: Olive oil has a great flavor for roast vegetables, but you can also use other oils like vegetable oil, canola oil, or avocado oil.
Simple, right? The combination of garlic powder, salt and pepper, and olive oil makes this easy grilled potato recipe so delicious! It’s a simple seasoning, but the flavor is incredible. After 30 minutes on the grill, this will give you the most delicious crispy potatoes.
Isabel’s Top Tip
Add more seasonings to fit the flavors you want! I like adding dried herbs like rosemary, thyme, and oregano depending on the flavors of the main course. I’ve also added Parmesan cheese and it was delicious!
Potatoes on Grill Instructions
1: Mix the Seasonings
In a bowl, mix together garlic powder, sea salt, and pepper.
2: Prepare Baking Dish
Spray a baking dish (I use a 9″ square baking dish) with cooking spray to stop the potatoes from sticking. Make sure the baking dish can withstand high heat!
3: Cut the Potatoes
Cut potatoes into cubes, then rinse them under running water and pat dry. Once rinsed, add them to the prepared baking dish.
4: Add the Oil
Pour olive oil on top of the potatoes, and toss them to coat evenly.
5: Season the Potatoes
With a spoonful at a time, add the seasonings to the potatoes and shake to season between spoonfuls.
6: Place on the Grill
Place the baking dish on the grill over medium heat, and cook for 30 minutes. Stir every 10 minutes to ensure even cooking.
7: Serve and Enjoy!
Remove from the heat once crispy and fork-tender, serve, and enjoy!

Grilling Potatoes Tips
- If you’re using Yukon Gold or red potatoes, be gentle stirring them, as the softer flesh can more easily break up.
- Feel free to add more seasonings! I like adding dried herbs, paprika, or a garnish of chives!
- You can also chop up an onion into large slices and add them to the pan for a sweet twist; they cook up soft and beautiful!
- You can use a grill basket if you prefer instead of the baking dish.
Potatoes on the Grill FAQs
Russet potatoes, red potatoes, or Yukon gold potatoes all work well on the grill. These potatoes will guarantee a crispy outside and soft center. You can also use fingerling potatoes, but larger, sliced potatoes get that crispy edge.
When potatoes are cut into small cubes, you will grill them for 30 minutes over medium heat. Make sure to stir them every 10 minutes! For very small diced potatoes, you can lower the cooking time to 20 minutes.
Cut potatoes into small cubes of the approximately 1 inch square. This ensures crispy potatoes on the outside with a soft center. You can also cut them into fries, but I find that they break easily when mixed.
How to Store Leftover Potatoes
- Refrigerator: Store leftover potatoes in a sealed container for up to 4 days. I recommend eating them quickly, as leftover roast potatoes don’t do well in the fridge.
- Freezer: I find that large sliced potatoes such as these freeze poorly, so I don’t recommend freezing them!
- Reheating: To reheat grilled potatoes, the best way to ensure a good texture is to reheat them in the oven. Place in a greased baking dish at 350° for 5-7 minutes, until warmed through and crispy. You can also use the air fryer.

JoAnn Coon says
Can you bake the potatoes in the oven instead of grilling them? If so. What oven temp & time would you suggest?
Isabel Laessig says
Absolutely, JoAnn. I have a recipe for potatoes in foil that can be made on the grill or in the oven. I would recommend following the oven directions from there: Potatoes in Foil (link). Don’t mind that it says on the grill – there are oven instructions in the post and recipe card. You can use the same seasoning found in this recipe as you prefer.
