Strip Steak Recipe
The first time I tried marinated and grilled NY steak, I remembered once again why steak is the ultimate in luxury foods. There’s just nothing like a grilled steak. Tender, juicy, crispy but melt-in-your-mouth soft, this recipe makes a steak you’ll remember forever!
Which is why it’s so incredible that grilling New York steak is so easy. Even the marinade comes together in seconds with basic pantry ingredients! And that tenderizing marinade is where the magic happens.
Looking for a delicious steak recipe, but you don’t have access to a grill? Never fear! With a cast iron pan, this makes a perfect New York steak stove recipe.
Marinated New York Strip Steak Ingredients
- NY Strip Steaks
- Soy sauce
- Balsamic vinegar
- Mongolian fire oil
- Minced garlic
- Lemon juice
If you can’t find the fire oil, don’t worry! Sesame oil will taste great too, or a blend of red chili oil and sesame oil. (Just be careful with chili oil, it gets spicy fast!)
How to Cook New York Steak
- In a bowl large enough to hold the steaks, combine all the marinade ingredients and stir well.
- Place the steaks in the bowl and turn them until all are coated with marinade. Cover, and let it chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
- Remove the steaks from the fridge and set on a plate to come to room temperature. In the meantime, heat the grill to medium high.
- Place the steaks on the grill and cook for 1½ minutes, then rotate the steaks about 45° and cook for another 1½ minutes. Flip the steaks, and repeat this step.
- Remove the steaks from the grill once they reach the desired internal temperature. Rest for 10 minutes, slice, and serve!
Tips for Grilling New York Strip
- As always, when you’re cooking steaks, cooking times are only estimates! The only way to truly get just the right doneness is to use a meat thermometer. Check out my guide below for how long to cook New York strip steak!
- Rotating the steaks gives the surface a beautiful diamond-shaped grill mark, but it’s just for the visuals! You can skip rotating the steaks, too.
- Don’t have access to a grill? Never fear- you can cook these steaks the exact same way using a cast-iron skillet!
- Always make sure to allow your steaks to come to room temperature before cooking them, and then let them rest 10 minutes before slicing.

How Long to Grill New York Strip
As with all steaks, it’s important to measure the internal temperature of the steak to tell how long to cook it! All steaks are different and the thickness of steaks varies greatly, so the only way to be sure is to use a meat thermometer.
This recipe cooks steaks to medium-rare in about 6-8 minutes of cook time. Even a few seconds of cooking can take a steak from rare to medium-rare, so make sure to keep checking the temperature!
New York Steak FAQ
Cooking time for steak depends on how well done you like your steak, as well as the thickness of the cut. For a 1-inch cut it takes 6-8 minutes to grill New York strip to medium rare. However, it’s best to just check the meat with a meat thermometer!
Marinating strip steak isn’t necessary, but it can add a ton of flavor and tenderness to the steak! As it’s a strip steak and thus made of many long fibers, it can be very helpful to tenderize the steak correctly, and marinade is a perfect solution.
I like cooking my NY strip steak on the grill! This gives the outside an incredible char and smokey flavor that’s second to none. When I can’t get to the grill, however, New York steak cooks up perfectly in a cast iron pan over the stove, too.
Dietary Restrictions + Variations
- Gluten-Free: Steak is naturally gluten free, but the marinade isn’t! To make the Asian marinade gluten-free, replace the soy sauce with Tamari or Coconut Aminos.
- Soy Free: Swap out the soy sauce in the marinade for Coconut Aminos! Note that aminos are sweeter than soy sauce and will effect the flavor. Soy-free soy sauce is also a great option.
- Keto: Balsamic vinegar toes the line on being keto-friendly, so if you want to avoid the carbs, try rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar.
