Ham and Cheese Croissant
What could be better than a warm, flaky croissant filled with savory ham and gooey Swiss cheese? Just one thing: ham and cheese croissants with a sticky-sweet honey glaze on the outside, filled with the perfect combination of flavors on the inside!
The combination of sweet-and-savory ham with gooey Swiss cheese, sweet fig jam, peppery arugula, and honey glaze is completely irresistible.
Making these ham croissants is a breeze, too. They’re perfect for busy days or when you want to serve your family something special without any fuss. It might seem simple, but there is something so magical about this recipe!
Use leftover holiday ham, or grab some sliced deli ham to use; either way, this ham and Swiss croissant recipe is truly delicious!
Ham and Swiss Croissant Ingredients
- Croissants: Use store-bought croissants, or, if you have your own favorite homemade croissants, use those!
- Fig Jam: Apricot preserves also work well, but Fig Jam is best. It is so delicious with these croissants! You can leave it out if you prefer, but trust me… you should give it a try if you can.
- Ham: You can use sliced deli ham or leftover holiday ham for this recipe (my favorite).
- Swiss Cheese: Swiss is my cheese of choice to pair with ham, and it works best with the other ingredients in these croissants. An alternative would be white cheddar.
- Arugula: Arugula is peppery and slightly bitter, which is what makes it such a great choice for pairing with sweet and savory flavors like ham and fig jam. Feel free to use other greens if you prefer, but I recommend trying arugula first!
- Honey: Use your favorite honey for this recipe. If it’s a flavored honey, keep in mind that will affect the taste.
- Everything Bagel Seasoning: You can buy this mix at the store, but I recommend making my homemade Everything Bagel seasoning for the best flavor and total customization!
How to Make Ham and Cheese Croissants
- Preheat the oven to 375℉. While it preheats, spread fig jam evenly on the inside of your croissant halves.
- Layer with a few slices of ham. I’m using leftover holiday ham, but you can also use deli ham. If you’re using leftovers, keep in mind that whatever you glazed the ham with will add the same flavor to your ham and cheese croissants.
- Layer cheese slices over the ham. Although I’m using Swiss for my ham croissants, you can also use other cheeses, such as white cheddar. This is a great way to mix things up if you’ve made this recipe already and want to experiment with different flavors.
- Fresh arugula tops off the ham and cheese. This peppery, slightly bitter green is the best pairing for this combination of flavors. Trust me, if you have yet to try it, you simply must!
- Top your sandwich with the other half of the croissant. Brush the tops of the croissants with warmed honey using a pastry brush or, if you don’t have a pastry brush, the back of a spoon.
- Sprinkle the croissants with Everything Bagel seasoning. The toasty flavor of this seasoning is a great way to add even more depth to these tasty croissant sandwiches!
- Bake on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet or greased cookie sheet for 6-8 minutes, or until the croissants are golden-brown and the cheese starts to melt and ooze out of the sides. Slice your croissant sandwiches, serve, and enjoy!
Ham Croissant Recipe Variations
- For a copycat Starbucks version: Use hickory-smoked ham and Swiss cheese with your croissants!
- Try out other meat options: Instead of using ham slices, try prosciutto, bacon, turkey, or sliced chicken.
- Use your favorite cheese: Swap out the cheese and use what you have on hand! Cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, muenster cheese, or Gruyere cheese all work well.
- Swap out the fig jam: Replace it with any sweet jam like apricot or raspberry, or replace it with any savory-sweet sauce like Dijon mustard or honey mustard!
- Garnish the sandwiches: Sometimes I will top these sandwiches with melted butter and poppy seeds for delicious buttery croissants.
Ham and Cheese Croissant Recipe FAQ
Yes, store-bought croissants work perfectly for convenience and ease! You can also make homemade croissants for this recipe and layer with them with meat and cheese after they have cooled to room temperature.
Keep a close eye on the croissants while baking and cover them with foil if the tops start to darken too quickly. The foil will protect the tops from burning!
Storing and Reheating Croissants
- Storing: Allow your leftover ham croissants to reach room temperature, then store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day.
- Reheating: Place in the oven at 350℉ for 5 minutes, or until warmed through, or in the microwave for 20-second intervals until warm. You can also reheat in the air fryer at 350℉ for about 3-5 minutes as well.
