Mexican Pizza Recipe
My family and I are a Taco Tuesday kind of family, but for us, that doesn’t always mean making traditional tacos in a shell. Sometimes, it means making tortilla lasagna, taco salad bowls, taco beef casserole, taco soup, or, of course, this taco pizza recipe!
My recipe for taco pizza was inspired by Taco Bell’s Mexican pizza, but I decided to take the concept a few steps further to make it easy to prepare at home. By using store-bought pizza dough as a base for the delicious taco pizza toppings, this recipe comes together in no time at all. It’s the perfect school night treat or fun Sunday dinner!
Why You’ll Love My Taco Pizza Recipe
Kids love taco pizza!
Kids love tacos, kids love pizza, and kids especially love taco pizza! Just ask my grandkids. Plus, it has the added benefit of being much easier to clean up after than a taco bar, which has a tendency to leave the dining table looking like a lettuce and cheese tornado came through. All the pizza takes is one pan!
You can customize it however you want!
This easy Mexican pizza recipe is the perfect canvas for making your own. Add toppings like cilantro, pickled onions, or guacamole, or change up the meat by using ground turkey or your favorite taco meat seasoning.
Mexican Pizza Ingredients
- Pizza dough: Store-bought pizza dough makes everything so much easier. But you can also make your own, if you prefer!
- Ground beef: You can use fresh ground beef, or use up leftover taco meat. I’ve also made these with ground turkey, ground pork, and ground chicken, and all have turned out great.
- Taco seasoning: I prefer to use my homemade seasoning blend, but you can use your favorite packet seasoning, too. Choose your favorite!
- Water: Water is the secret ingredient to good taco meat. Yes, I mean it! Add it to the pan as it cooks to let the taco meat simmer in a delicious seasoning sauce.
- Refried beans: I use traditional refried beans, but you can use vegetarian or even make your own. Rosarita is a delicious brand of refried beans if you’re not sure on what brand to use, but store brand works great, too.
- Salsa: You can use any salsa you like. I prefer my classic restaurant style salsa for this, but salsa verde or a sweet peach salsa would be delicious, too.
- Cheddar cheese: Cheddar cheese can be swapped out for monterey jack, pepper jack, or a Mexican cheese blend. Choose your favorite!
- Olives: Black olives are optional, but I love them on this pizza for the briny, salty flavor.
- Tomato: Diced fresh tomato is a great topping for tacos, and even better for this pizza!
- Green onions: Green onion can be swapped out for finely sliced red onion or pickled onions.
- Sour cream: For serving. Place a dollop on each slice!
How to Make Taco Pizza
1: Bake Crust
Preheat the oven to 400°F, and grease a large baking sheet. Roll out the pizza dough into the pan so it reaches the edges, then pre-bake for 8 minutes. For easier cleanup, add parchment paper to the pan.
2: Brown Meat
As the crust is baking, add the ground beef to a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown, drain the grease if desired, then add the water and taco seasoning ingredients and let simmer until the water is dissolved, about 5 minutes.
3: Add Beans
Add in the refried beans, and stir over the heat until hot and well mixed. The beans should start to thin out and be less chunky.
4: Spread on Pizza
Remove the crust once the 8 minutes are up and spread with salsa. Then layer on top the beef and beans mixture, and press it flat with a spatula.
5: Add Cheese
Sprinkle the shredded cheese over top, then top with olives.
6: Bake
Bake for 8-10 minutes until the cheese is browning and bubbly.
7: Add Toppings
Slice the green onions and tomatoes, then sprinkle them on the baked pizza.
8: Slice and Serve!
Slice with a pizza slicer or kitchen shears, then top with a dollop of sour cream and serve!
Homemade Taco Pizza Expert Tips
- You can use refrigerated pizza dough, homemade, or even pre-baked pizza crusts! I like to make pizza dough and freeze it in balls in the freezer so I have it ready at any time.
- Lining the pan with parchment paper will mean all you need to clean up is the skillet!
- Change things up by swapping toppings out for whatever you love on tacos! Try different cheeses, swap the ground beef for sliced steak or barbacoa, and try out different salsa like a smoky chipotle salsa!
Leftover Pizza Storage and Reheating
- Refrigerator: Leftover pizza can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days. I recommend wrapping each slice in foil for easier reheating, then placing the slices in a plastic bag or airtight container.
- Freezer: I wouldn’t recommend freezing this pizza once it has been baked, as the cheese won’t reheat well. You can freeze it before baking it for up to 3 months, wrapped in plastic wrap.
- Reheating: For crispy reheated pizza, wrap the pizza in foil and place it in the air fryer or oven at 350°F. Heat for 5 minutes in the air fryer or 10 minutes in the oven.
Taco Pizza Recipes FAQ
Taco pizza is exactly what it sounds like: pizza made with the fillings for tacos! Anything you like on tacos can go on a pizza crust to make a delicious taco pizza. I like mine with taco beef, salsa, cheese, and beans, but they’re great with chicken or vegetables too!
When using canned or pre-made dough, it’s always a good idea to let the dough come to room temperature before shaping it. This will let the dough soften and become more stretchy, lessening the chance of it tearing while being formed.
