Making chicken wings in the air fryer
How do you cook chicken wings in the air fryer? It’s simple: pat them dry, season them, air fry at 380°F for 25-30 minutes, check the temperature to make sure it’s 165°F, then serve, and enjoy! I’ll show you how to air fry chicken wings so they’re crispy and tasty, with my own homemade lemon pepper seasoning.
Here’s what makes these wings special
There is nothing I love more than a big platter of crispy chicken wings, served with dipping sauces and celery sticks! They’re the perfect treat for a party, especially on game day. But to be honest, I like them even for a regular family dinner now and then. Here’s what makes these wings great:
- They’re so easy to make. It’s a breeze to achieve perfectly crispy, golden-brown wings in your air fryer. It’s really just a matter of drying, seasoning, and cooking them, and there you have it! Perfect wings.
- You won’t heat up your house. My favorite time outside of football season to enjoy wings is during the summer, but summer is not my favorite time to have the oven on. Air frying chicken wings means no hot oven to sweat over.
- They’re the perfect party food. Everyone loves these wings. Serve them with dipping sauce and celery sticks, and I promise they will disappear.
Ingredients to air fry chicken wings
You won’t need much to air fry these wings. The most important element is going to be my homemade lemon pepper seasoning, which I’ll happily share with you!
- Chicken wings separated into drumettes and flats – see How to Cut Chicken Wings for a super simple guide to cutting wings yourself! This will be easier on your wallet than buying them pre-cut!
- Olive oil is the best oil for wings, in my opinion. You can also use avocado oil or another vegetable oil, though.
- My lemon pepper seasoning. I’ve outlined what you need for it below!
- Extra garlic powder and salt in addition to the seasoning below.
Isabel’s lemon pepper seasoning for wings
- Lemon zest – make sure only to grate the outer yellow layer, and not the bitter white parts!
- Garlic powder, for that kick of garlic without using fresh.
- Ground black pepper – it’s best if you can grind it yourself, fresh.
- Salt, of course! Use kosher salt or, my favorite, Maldon sea salt flakes.
To make lemon pepper seasoning, add all ingredients to a bowl, and mix. Homemade lemon pepper seasoning is best fresh, but can be stored in an airtight container with a tight-sealing lid, such as a glass jar, a plastic or metal spine container, or a resealable plastic bag with the air pressed out. See my Lemon Pepper Seasoning post for more details!
You can also use pre-packaged lemon pepper seasoning for this air fryer recipe, of course. Do what works for you!
How to Air Fry Chicken Wings
1: Pat chicken dry
Preheat your air fryer to 380°F for a few minutes while you prepare the wings. Pat chicken wings dry with a paper towel. This is important to help the seasoning adhere to the chicken and will allow them to crisp up properly in the air fryer.
2: Toss ’em in oil
In a large mixing bowl, toss the chicken wings with olive oil to coat them evenly.
3: Season the wings
Sprinkle the lemon pepper seasoning, garlic powder, and salt evenly over the wings. Toss the wings again to ensure they are well coated with the seasoning. You may want to press down the seasoning to make sure it sticks.
4: Place in the air fryer
Place the seasoned chicken wings inside the air fryer in a single layer. Make sure not to overcrowd the air fryer basket or tray. You may need to cook them in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer.
5: Air frying chicken wings
Air fry the wings for 25-30 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time. The exact cooking time may vary depending on the size of your wings and the specific air fryer model you’re using. The wings should be crispy and golden brown when done and will have an internal temperature of at least 165°F as read by a meat thermometer.
6: Serve and savor every bite!
Once the wings are cooked to your desired level of crispiness and have reached a safe internal temperature, remove them from your air fryer. If you want to enhance the lemon flavor, you can grate some fresh lemon zest over the hot wings just before serving! Serve with your favorite dipping sauce for wings, and enjoy!
How long to air fry chicken wings
At an air fryer temperature of 380°F, your total time air frying chicken wings should be around 25-30 minutes. However, this varies based on air fryer model and the size of your wings! I recommend always using a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature, rather than relying on exact timing. See my Chicken Temperature guide for more info.
Tips for air frying chicken wings
- Pat the chicken wings dry to get rid of excess moisture before seasoning. This helps the oil and spices adhere to the chicken, and promotes crispy chicken wings.
- Toss the wings thoroughly in the seasoning to evenly coat them. You want every bite to be flavor-packed!
- Always preheat the air fryer when cooking chicken wings. Preheating helps cook the wings evenly and to crisp perfection.
- Flip the wings halfway through the cook time for crispy wings.
- You can’t tell the doneness of air fryer wings by sight alone. Use a meat thermometer if you need to check the internal temperature!
- If you’re cooking the wings in batches, you can keep the first batch warm by setting your oven to a low warming temperature and storing the wings inside on a baking tray.
- Avoid using nonstick cooking spray in your air fryer. It can break down the non-stick coating of the air fryer basket.
Isabel’s Air Fryer
It’s amazing what you can cook with an air fryer! I love mine and highly recommend it. It even has a steaming function to re-hydrate stale bread!

FAQ for air fryer wings
No; for the best air fryer chicken wings, you should air fry them in a single layer with at least a little bit of room between each wing. This helps them crisp up and cook evenly so they’re juicy and tender. If you have too many wings to fit in the basket, cook in batches and keep the first batch warm at a low temperature in the oven.
Both the oven and air fryer are great choices for cooking wings, with delicious, crispy results. However, air frying wings tends to cook them a little more quickly, and helps them crisp up a bit more, too. But, if you have yet to try baking chicken wings, see my Buffalo Chicken Wings recipe – they are total perfection!
If you don’t use oil, the wings may stick to the basket or each other when cooking. For best results, it’s a good idea to at least lightly coat the basket or tray with a little bit of olive oil before air frying wings.
