Dill Pickle Dip Ingredients Notes
- Butter: I recommend using unsalted butter to avoid making your dip too salty. Only a little butter is used for browning the panko breadcrumbs. If you prefer, you could also use a lower fat oil to fry the breadcrumbs rather than butter.
- Panko Breadcrumbs: If necessary, you can also use gluten-free panko breadcrumbs. Keep in mind you will want to leave out the fried onions if you're making gluten-free pickle dip.
- Fried Onions: This simple addition delivers amazing flavor. I love adding fried onions to this dip! You can leave them out if you're making a gluten-free pickle dip, but otherwise, be sure to include them for the best flavor.
- Cream Cheese: You will want your cream cheese to be softened so it's easy to mix. Leave it out for about 30 minutes to soften on the counter. Keep in mind that using whipped cream cheese will give your dip a completely different texture.
- Mayonnaise: I recommend using a high-quality, flavorful mayo you love. My favorite is Kewpie mayonnaise. It is truly delicious!
- Sour Cream: In a pinch, you could also use unflavored Greek yogurt.
- Dill Pickles: The star of the show. I recommend you avoid using sweet pickles, but spicy pickles and any homemade pickles are likely to be delicious.
- Pickle Juice: From the jar of your dill pickles.
- Seasoning: The seasoning for dill pickle dip is made up of dried parsley, dried dill, dried chives, garlic powder, onion powder, and ground black pepper. You can use fresh dill, fresh parsley, and fresh chives if you prefer.
How to Make Fried Pickle Dip
- In a skillet, add the butter and melt it over medium heat.
- Add the panko breadcrumbs to the skillet and stir for 3-5 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
- Remove the breadcrumb mixture from the skillet and transfer it to a bowl. To the bowl, add the crushed fried onions and 1 teaspoon of parsley, and mix until combined. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, mix the cream cheese with a fork for 2-3 minutes, or until it becomes creamy.
- Add the mayonnaise, sour cream, chopped dill pickles, pickle juice, dried dill, dried chives, the remaining 1 teaspoon of dried parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, and ground black pepper to the cream cheese. Mix until fully combined.
- Transfer the mixture to your serving dish. Top the dip with the breadcrumb mixture, then serve with your favorite chips!
Tips for Making Pickle Dip
- Because this recipe uses such simple ingredients, higher quality ingredients will be even more noticeable. Use your favorite high-quality pickles and cream cheese for the best tasting dip!
- For dips, it's crucial to soften the cream cheese to room temperature before mixing. This makes it much easier to mix it to the correct smooth consistency.
- Adjust the seasoning to your taste. If the dip is a little too tangy for your liking, a pinch of sugar can help balance out the flavor.
- Always add the toasted panko just before serving. If you're making the dip ahead of time, you'll want to withhold the breadcrumbs until you're ready to serve the dip.
- Experiment with different dippables! Vegetables like carrot sticks or cucumber rounds make great wholesome choices over classic potato chips. My family also loves bagel chips and pretzels for dipping in pickle dip.
- For a bit of heat, add a pinch of cayenne or diced jalapeño.
- If your dip is too thick for your liking, you can thin it out using a bit of milk or pickle juice. If it's too thin, add more cream cheese.
- Feel free to add other ingredients like chopped herbs, bacon bits, or shredded cheese to customize the dip to your liking.
Make-Ahead Instructions
Prepare the dip up to 2 days in advance and store it in the refrigerator to let the flavors meld together. Just remember to add any crunchy toppings, such as the toasted breadcrumbs, right before serving.
Storing Leftover Pickle Dip
Transfer the leftover dip to an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Because this dip uses cream cheese as a base and is not a hot dip, I do not recommend freezing it.
What to Serve with Pickle Dip

- Crispy Baked Potato Wedges
