What is teriyaki sauce?
Teriyaki is a Japanese sauce recipe that’s so versatile and delicious. It’s perfect for pairing with a wide variety of dishes.
Traditionally, it uses soy sauce, mirin, sake, and sugar, but you can simplify making it at home by using the ingredients in this guide on how to make teriyaki sauce! The flavors are truly so delicious.
This sweet-and-savory sauce recipe goes well with everything from fish to vegetables, Japanese chicken recipes, steak stir fry recipes, pork cutlet recipes, and noodle stir fry.
It is by far our favorite sauce for Japanese recipes! But it pairs perfectly with other dishes, too. Especially our Shrimp Shumai, Thai Chicken Meatballs, or Thai Sausage Rolls!
The best Japanese teriyaki sauce is especially delicious brushed over grilled or pan-fried meat and seafood to add a burst of flavor and shine.
What is the best way to thicken teriyaki sauce?
I like to store my sauce on the thin side to use as an easy glaze. If you’d like to thicken the sauce further, you can simmer it longer on the stove to reduce the mixture, or stir in cornstarch or potato starch as a thickener.
- In a small bowl, whisk together 1 tablespoon of cornstarch or potato starch with 1 tablespoon of water until smooth.
- Pour into the small saucepan with the 1 ½ cups teriyaki sauce and cook over medium heat, whisking often, until the sauce has thickened.
Once you know how to make teriyaki sauce thick or thin, you can fine-tune it to your liking for your favorite recipes!
