Fruit Pizza
I'll be honest with you all: sometimes, I think I take food a little too seriously. When my kids all moved out, I admit that there was even a period of time where food was just something we made because we needed to eat. No more making cute decorative treats or setting up plates all nice. To be frank, I forgot to have fun with food!
It might sound silly, but my diet journey has actually been a huge inspiration for finding the fun in food again! I had seen pictures of cute little fruit pizzas going around and decided to make my own for a little dinner party with my friends. As soon as I started decorating those little watermelon slices with fruit, I realized I'd lost something terribly important, and swore to never lose it again: fun!
And this fruit pizza recipe is the epitome of fun. Refreshing watermelon, sweet creamy yogurt, and all the fresh berries you can pile on top makes for a dessert that's fun, colorful, and absolutely delicious. Plus, it's done in minutes, no cooking required!
Tools to Make Watermelon Pizza
- A sharp knife for cutting the watermelon. The sharper and heavier the knife, the easier it'll be!
- A thick cutting board.
- A butter knife or spatula for spreading the yogurt.
- A large round serving platter for serving!
Ingredients in Fruit Pizza
- Watermelon: The most important part is getting a nice, ripe watermelon that isn't going to fall to pieces when sliced! I recommend seedless watermelon as it's both easiest to eat and has the firmest flesh. Check out my instructions below for how to pick a good watermelon!
- Yogurt: Any yogurt you like will work great here. I typically use coconut yogurt as it's vegan friendly, but you can use anything you'd like. If using Greek yogurt, sweeten it a little before adding it, or drizzle the pizza with honey or maple syrup.
- Fresh fruit: This is where you can truly get creative. I've included a list of my favorite fruit for topping fruit pizza, but anything that doesn't brown quickly will be great.
- Blackberries
- Kiwi
- Strawberries
- Sliced cherries
- Pineapple
- Peaches
- Mango
- Blueberries
- Oranges
- Optional toppings:
- Coconut flakes (think parmesan cheese flakes!)
- Fresh mint leaves (like fresh basil, but for dessert!)
- Honey
- Maple syrup
- Chocolate chips
- Pecans, almonds, or other thinly sliced nuts
- Whipped cream
- Chocolate sauce (like a pretend balsamic glaze!)

- Remove the stems from your strawberries and cut them in half. Set them aside. Using a spoon or a spatula, spread a layer of coconut yogurt around the inside of each watermelon slice. Try to leave a bit of space at the top near the rind to look like a crust.½ cup strawberries,1 cup coconut yogurt
- Garnish watermelon with a layer of strawberries, raspberries, cherries, and blueberries as you please. To finish sprinkle some dried coconut on the top of your Watermelon pizza. This is optional, but I love the flavor it adds. Serve immediately and enjoy!½ cup cherries,½ cup raspberries,½ cup blueberries,3 Tablespoons dried coconut
Notes
- Cut the watermelon into nice thick slices! If you cut it too thin, it won't be able to hold up the weight of the fruit toppings and can break.
- You can use cream cheese frosting instead of yogurt for an extra decadent watermelon dessert pizza!
- Avoid fruit that brown quickly when exposed to the air, such as bananas or apples.
- You can make this watermelon dessert up to a few hours ahead of time and store it in the fridge. Don't make it days ahead, as the liquid will seep out of the fruit and it can start tasting stale.

Savory Variations
Looking for a savory twist? Try topping your watermelon slices with crumbled feta cheese, thinly sliced red onion, a sprinkle of salt, and crisscrossed drizzles of extra-virgin olive oil and balsamic glaze. It's like a watermelon salad to-go!
FAQ
You can make watermelon slice pizza ahead of time by a few hours, but I wouldn't recommend any longer than that. The water in watermelon will slowly evaporate or drip out and can leave the slices dry and stale.
There are a few things to look for when choosing a watermelon at the store!
Locate the field spot: this is where the watermelon rested on the ground while growing; the spot should be large and yellow in color.
Look for sugar spots: small black spots indicate sugar is seeping out. Avoid any watermelon with these spots.
Go for a dull appearance: you actually don't want to pick a watermelon that is shiny on the outside; this indicates the watermelon is unripe.
Pick a heavy melon: the heavier the watermelon, the better! This means it still has lots of water inside, leading to a juicier melon.
Uniform shape: look for a round or oval-shaped watermelon with a hard exterior and no irregular bumps. This makes the watermelon easier to cut up and ensures no bad spots inside.
