Avocado Cream Sauce
The first time I tried making this avocado crema, it was over a heaping breakfast of chilaquiles. Since then, I have found every excuse to make it, from serving it over birria tacos, to using it as a dip for chips or taquitos.
To be honest, there are some recipes I can’t set down on the table unless they have a bowl of avocado cream sauce on the side – it makes everything that much better!
If you love guacamole, trust me, this is the sauce recipe for you. My avocado crema recipe has everything there is to love about an avocado sauce, complete with tangy Greek yogurt and lime. Try it out and let me know what you think!
Avocado Creme Ingredients
- Avocados
- Greek yogurt or sour cream
- Garlic powder
- Lime juice
- Maldon sea salt or kosher salt
- Black pepper
Sea salt flakes really come through in this avocado crema, so I recommend giving them a try. As for the Greek yogurt, you can use sour cream if you prefer. It will taste roughly the same either way!
How to Make Avocado Crema
- Add Greek yogurt, avocados, lime juice, garlic powder, sea salt, and black pepper to a food processor or blender.
- Blend until smooth and creamy, with no lumps. Taste and add extra seasoning as necessary.
- Serve, and enjoy! It’s amazing on just about anything you can think of!
How long is avocado crema good for?
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. I don’t recommend freezing the crema as the sauce will break.
Creamy Avocado Sauce Recipe Tips
- Use large, ripe avocados. If your avocados aren’t ripe enough yet, they will be impossible to cut and peel without it being difficult or making a mess.
- If your avocados aren’t ripe enough yet, add them to a brown paper bag. If you have a banana, throw it in there with them to help them ripen.
- If you don’t have a blender or food processor, don’t worry. You can make this recipe using a fork just by mixing it in a bowl. It won’t reach the same smooth pureed texture as blending it would, but it will still be delicious.
- Add spices to mix it up. This avocado cream sauce is perfect for building flavors off of, so don’t be afraid to add other spices or fresh cilantro if you want to try something new.

Avocado Dressing FAQ
Avocado crema uses a mixture of avocados, Greek yogurt or sour cream, garlic powder, lime juice, salt, and pepper. Other ingredients like cilantro and cumin could also be used.
Greek yogurt and crème fraîche are the best substitutes for sour cream, especially in an avocado cream sauce recipe. If you don’t have either, you can also use buttermilk as a substitute, but this will make a much thinner sauce.
