Avocado Cream
I first tried serving my avocado crema recipe with chilaquiles for breakfast, and ever since then it’s been a big hit in my household! I find every excuse to make avocado cream sauce, whether serving it with birria tacos, taquitos, or even as a simple dip for tortilla chips.
If you love guacamole, this is the sauce recipe for you. Avocado cream sauce is easy to make using simple ingredients, and has a tangy lime-twist that makes it extra delicious.
Avocado Creme Ingredients
- Avocados: For best results, your avocados should be nice and ripe. They’ll be soft and easy to cut. If you struggle with cutting your avocado or it’s too hard, it isn’t ready to use in cream sauce. You can quicken the ripening process by adding your avocados to a brown paper bag at room temperature.
- Greek Yogurt: You can also use sour cream, both will work! Note that if you use a lower-fat alternative, it will taste different.
- Garlic Powder: A pinch of garlic powder really brings this sauce together.
- Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice is best. Don’t use any bottled lime juice – it won’t taste as good!
- Salt and Pepper: I recommend sea salt flakes, but you can also use kosher salt. Freshly cracked black pepper works best, too.
Avocado Crema Sauce Instructions
- Add Greek yogurt, avocados, lime juice, garlic powder, sea salt, and black pepper to a food processor or blender.
- Blend until smooth and creamy, with no lumps. Taste and add extra seasoning as necessary.
- Serve, and enjoy! It’s amazing on just about anything you can think of!
How long is avocado crema good for?
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. I don’t recommend freezing the crema as the sauce will break.
Creamy Avocado Sauce Recipe Tips
- Use large, ripe avocados. If your avocados aren’t ripe enough yet, they will be impossible to cut and peel without it being difficult or making a mess.
- If your avocados aren’t ripe enough yet, add them to a brown paper bag. If you have a banana, throw it in there with them to help them ripen.
- If you don’t have a blender or food processor, don’t worry. You can make this recipe using a fork just by mixing it in a bowl. It won’t reach the same smooth pureed texture as blending it would, but it will still be delicious.
- Add spices to mix it up. This avocado cream sauce is perfect for building flavors off of, so don’t be afraid to add other spices or fresh cilantro if you want to try something new.

Avocado Crema Recipe FAQ
Avocado crema uses a mixture of avocados, Greek yogurt or sour cream, garlic powder, lime juice, salt, and pepper. Other ingredients like cilantro and cumin could also be used.
Greek yogurt and crème fraîche are the best substitutes for sour cream, especially in an avocado cream sauce recipe. If you don’t have either, you can also use buttermilk as a substitute, but this will make a much thinner sauce.
