The Best Ham Recipe
One of my favorite things about ham recipes is that you could make ham every other week and never make it the same way twice! With so many ways to prepare ham, I always look forward to choosing the right recipe for the occasion.
And after all, how could you pick a favorite? The combinations are endless! Between the type of ham, how you heat it, and what the best ham glaze recipe for your tastes will be, there are so many delicious options.
That’s what this list is for! I’ve collected all my favorite recipes for ham in one place. Want the ham glaze recipe from one, but to cook it a different way? Don’t worry- you can mix and match every single one!
Ham Recipe Tips
- Ham is almost always entirely pre-cooked, so the method of heating it up comes down to what you have time for and access to. All cooking methods will work perfectly!
- It’s absolutely critical to pay attention to when ham needs to be covered or uncovered. This will ensure moist meat that doesn’t dry out.
- Cooking a different type of ham than the one listed? Don’t worry- just adjust the cook time for each type of ham. Bone-in will take roughly 30% longer to cook, while smaller hams will heat up faster!
- Don’t skimp on the glaze! Glaze is by far the most important part of ensuring your ham is flavorful and moist!

What to Do With Leftover Ham
Hands down, my favorite thing about making ham for dinner is leftover ham! There’s no shortage of amazing and hearty recipes using ham, and sliced ham off the bone is so much better than deli slices. Recipes with leftover ham are so good, I’m more excited for them then the ham dinner itself!

Recipes for Ham FAQs
Most ham comes precooked, so the best way to cook ham is to cook it according to what you have access to and the other dishes you may be making at the same time. For example, if you’re preparing a holiday meal and making side dishes in the oven, try smoking, air frying, or pressure cooking ham to save oven space and time.
Making ham more flavorful is all about the ham glaze! Ham is a very mild meat on its own with a salty, savory flavor that really shines when combined with sweet glazes, and carries other flavors well. Make sure to add plenty of glaze and brush it between each slice.
Dry ham is the product of not covering it and not using enough glaze or liquid! The best way to avoid ham drying out is to tent it in foil for the majority of the cook time, then to cover it in plenty of glaze as soon as it’s uncovered. If baking or cooking in a pan, adding broth to the pan will ensure moist meat.
Leftover ham lasts for only 3-5 days in the fridge, so it’s best to make use of it quickly for leftover recipes! Another great alternative is to place the ham in a freezer-proof bag and freeze it for up to 3 months. Ham separates nicely while frozen and is easy to slice!
