Grilling Bison
Grilling bison burgers offers a low-calorie option packed with sweet flavor. It’s one of our favorite unique grilling ideas, especially alongside classic burgers like a mushroom swiss burger or poached egg burger. We also love making air fryer burgers.
What is a bison burger made of?
Cooking bison burgers requires just a few ingredients:
- 1 – 1 ½ pounds of ground bison meat
- 1 Tbsp. steak seasoning
- 4 slices of Gruyere cheese
- butter lettuce
- ½ red onion
- 4 brioche buns
- assorted condiments as preferred
How to Make Bison Burgers
To make your bison burgers, follow the steps below:
- Form your bison meat into four evenly-sized patties.
- Season each patty with steak seasoning.
- Preheat grill over medium heat. Add the seasoned patties to the grill and grill for four minutes on one side, then flip. Add the slices of Gruyere cheese, and grill for another four minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 140°F for medium rare or 160°F for well done.
- Remove from grill, then add to your bun and top with the lettuce, red onion, and your favorite condiments of choice.
Are bison burgers healthy?
Bison is lean red meat that has very little saturated fat. Bison meat is a great source of protein and other minerals, making it a fantastic choice for grilling.
What does a bison burger taste like?
Bison meat is very tender and has a bit of a sweeter taste to it. It’s very similar to beef with just a hint of a lighter flavor.
Even though it’s a lean red meat, there is no gamey aftertaste! If you love beef burgers, you’ll love bison burgers.
Where to Buy Bison Burgers
You can find ground bison meat or even frozen bison burger patties at most grocery stores that carry organic or natural products, such as Whole Foods, Sprouts, Natural Grocers, or even some regional grocery chains like H-E-B and Kroger.
And for chains like Publix, you may find packaged buffalo meat, but not bison meat. Buffalo burger meat is the same as bison, so you can use it interchangeably!
You can also order frozen bison meat online. If you have access to bison, you should definitely try grilling burgers with it!
