Burger with Egg
One bite of this juicy Fried Egg Burger, and you will swear by burgers with egg. There is no juicier, more delicious sauce for a burger than the golden, runny yolk of a fried egg! The flavor is unbeatable, too. It’s a perfect brunch burger or breakfast for dinner!
Burger with Egg Ingredients
- Ground Chuck: I make these delicious burgers starting with a ground beef patty. You can use 80/20 mix or 90/10 lean ground beef patties for this fried egg burger recipe, depending on your preference.
- Salt and Pepper: Make sure to use kosher salt or Maldon sea salt flakes and not table salt. This makes a major difference in flavor! I also like to use freshly cracked black pepper. You could also use my famous Burger Seasoning!
- Smoked Gruyere Cheese: Gruyere pairs beautifully with the flavor of hearty beef burgers and rich runny eggs, but you can use any cheese slices you prefer, though you may want to use other toppings depending on which cheese you choose. I recommend Fontina or Swiss cheese as a substitute for Gruyere. They both melt well.
- Caramelized Onions: You will need prepared caramelized onions if you want to add these to your burger, and I have the perfect easy caramelized onions recipe for you to follow!
- Eggs: I prefer to fry eggs for this hamburger with egg. You can also use poached eggs, however. I wouldn’t recommend using other methods of cooking eggs for a burger.
- Burger Buns: Use your favorite hamburger buns! I recommend brioche. They’re so buttery and delicious, with a classic soft texture perfect for a burger.
- Other Toppings (Optional): You can add so much to this egg burger recipe – more than just a slice of cheese and caramelized onions! Get creative and try adding crispy bacon, sliced avocado, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, or any of your favorite toppings for burgers. I love making this into a bacon cheeseburger with egg.
How to Make Burger with Egg
- Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. While the skillet heats, mix ground beef with salt and pepper. Make sure not to over-mix, as this can give your burgers a dense texture. Mix just enough to combine, then form them into four equal burger patties.
- Cook burger patties over medium-high heat until one side is seared well, about 3-5 minutes. If the burgers stick when you try to flip them, they’re not ready to flip! Allow them to sear another 30 seconds to 1 minute until they come up easily with a spatula.
- Flip burgers and sear for another 3-5 minutes, or until the burgers are done to your liking. 3 minutes on each side will cook a medium-rare burger if adding cheese. If you are not adding cheese, cook for 4 minutes instead.
- Set the burgers aside to rest for 5-10 minutes. Fry eggs in the same pan! No need for butter or oil. The fat from the burgers will keep the pan greased and cook the eggs well. Crack the egg into the skillet and cook until done to your preference. For a runny egg, the white should be completely cooked, but the yolks still liquid.
- If you prefer, you can toast buns in the pan, too. After removing the egg, rest the burger buns inside-down in the pan and toast for about 2-3 minutes or until nice and crisp.
- If you’re using caramelized onions for your burgers (see: Caramelized Red Onions), reheat them over gentle heat on the stove. If you want to caramelize onions at the same time as your burgers, set a separate pan to the side in Step 2 to cook them at the same time.
- When the eggs are ready, place a burger on each bottom bun. Top with a spoonful of caramelized onions and a fried egg. Place the top buns back on the burger very carefully. Serve with plenty of napkins, and enjoy!
Hamburger with Egg Recipe Tips
- Prepare your caramelized onions before or at the same time as the burgers, and set aside until you’re ready to use them.
- Or, cook the onions ahead of time, then cover and store them in the refrigerator. Reheat when ready to use.
- These burgers can also be cooked on the grill. When grilling your burgers (or cooking them in a cast-iron skillet), make sure they get a nice sear by not moving the burgers around too much. Let them sear over medium-high heat until they easily release with a spatula.
- Allow the burgers to rest for 5-10 minutes after cooking for best results.
Storing Leftover Egg Burgers
Burgers are always best right after cooking, but you can store leftovers, too. Store leftover burgers in an airtight bag or container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. I like to reheat my burgers in the air fryer for a crisp texture and even heating.
Burger with Eggs FAQ
Yes! Other favorite cheeses are Swiss cheese, Fontina cheese, or even cheddar cheese. Use your favorite cheese and adjust the toppings however you prefer.
The runny egg yolk is the only sauce you will need with this burger recipe, but if you like ketchup with your eggs, you may enjoy it on this burger, too. I recommend giving it a try without any additional condiments.
For medium-rare burgers, cook to 135°F as read by an instant read meat thermometer. For medium, cook to 145°F. For medium-well, cook to 150°F. And, finally, for well-done, cook to 160°F.
