Rosemary Garlic Salt Recipe
My go-to way to make any protein stand out as the star of a meal is choosing the perfect seasoning, and this rosemary salt recipe is exactly that. A simple rub recipe can make all the difference between a dish that’s just okay, and one that you’ll be thinking about for months!
I have a lot of experience making homemade seasonings, because to be honest, I don’t like spending extra money at the grocery store on premade mixes if I don’t have to. I make everything from my own Cajun seasoning to Italian seasoning, Creole seasoning, turkey rubs, seasoning for steak, pork chop dry rubs… really, everything!
This rosemary garlic salt is one of my favorite seasonings. It’s very versatile. You can use it for everything from steak to pork, chicken, turkey, etc. It complements the flavor of any protein very well. You can also use it to season veggies, which is great for vegetarian meals like my grilled portobello mushrooms.
I promise you’ll love the punch of flavor this seasoning packs, and it’s easy to make. Let’s get started!
Garlic Salt with Rosemary Ingredients
- Rosemary: The core of this rosemary and garlic salt recipe is, of course, the rosemary! It adds a gorgeous herbal flavor to the seasoning that isn’t overpowering and pairs well with any protein (especially steak and chicken). If you want, you can swap it out for other dried herbs to try, like thyme or sage.
- Garlic Powder: Allows for the pungent and tasty flavor of garlic without the risk of burning that fresh garlic has. Look for powder, not garlic granules.
- Sea Salt: Sea salt flakes are key to making a delicious rub, if you ask me. They have a better taste and texture than fine salts. You can also use kosher salt. I recommend Maldon sea salt flakes, though; they’re genuinely my favorite.
- Black Pepper: Freshly cracked black pepper works best for a fresh seasoning like this one.
How to Make Garlic Salt
Mix seasoning
Add dried rosemary, garlic powder, sea salt, and black pepper to a bowl. Whisk or use a fork to combine completely. Use immediately or store in a cool, dry location such as your pantry in an airtight container for up to 6 months for best flavor. Enjoy rosemary salt seasoning with steak, pork chops, roast chicken, or vegetables. It’s great with everything!
Expert Tips
- You can customize this seasoning by trying different herbs instead of rosemary, if you like. Garlic salt is a great base for working with different herbs. I personally love sage and thyme, or even combining a mixture of them.
- You can also add fresh herbs, if you like. But, if you use fresh, the seasoning won’t stay fresh for as long as it would if you used dry. Make sure to keep that in mind.
- Store leftover garlic salt in an airtight container in a cool, dry location such as your kitchen pantry. I like to store mine in a labeled spice jar with my other seasonings to have on hand whenever I need it. And trust me, you will want to use this seasoning constantly!
- Experiment with the foods you try my rosemary seasoning recipe with. You might be surprised just how versatile this seasoning is. I love, love, love it with oven roasted chicken or thinly sliced New York strip steak, but it’s also incredible with prime rib and even pan-fried pork chops.
Rosemary Salt Recipe FAQ
Homemade garlic salt with rosemary will last up to 6 months stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Technically, as a seasoning, it will last indefinitely, but the flavor starts to diminish after the 6 month mark. I recommend using it all and mixing more before then.
Use rosemary salt for steak, chicken, pork, vegetables, or even french fries and homemade breads. It pairs especially well with potatoes; try rosemary salt with potato wedges, roasted small potatoes, or grilled potatoes.

Hi Frances! We used Himalayan sea salt, but you can use any kind of sea salt you prefer – that was just what we had on hand. We used dried rosemary.
