Happy Sunday!
Most people think about setting new goals in January, but call me crazy—it’s just not the right time for me. There’s too much going on! So many family gatherings, holidays to celebrate, and cherished traditions to keep up with; it’s a beautiful whirlwind, but a whirlwind nonetheless. For me, November has always felt right for taking a moment to pause, look back on the year, and set my intentions for what’s to come.
Last November, I began a journey I didn’t tell many people about. It was personal, and to be honest, I was afraid of failing. The spark started after a weekend with Rory and Aiden. They’re growing up so fast, and as they do, they get more and more active.
I picked up Rory, swung him around, and felt winded in a way that caught me off guard. I’ve always prided myself on being an active, young grandparent, playing with my grandkids without missing a beat. That moment made me realize I had to make some changes if I wanted to enjoy every minute of their childhood to the fullest.
So, last November, I took a look in the mirror, acknowledged the pounds that had slowly crept up, and decided to do something about it. I didn’t make it about dieting—that’s not my style. I simply committed to a healthier lifestyle, starting with daily walks and being a little more mindful about what I eat.
After all, I could live on crusty bread and olive oil, and don’t get me started on my pizza obsession! Pizza and I have been best friends since high school.
In November, we also closed on our home in North Georgia, so it felt like the perfect time to take on this new challenge. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, especially with the holidays around the corner, but I allowed myself some grace. I didn’t expect perfection, just progress.
Walking in Florida was one thing; I could go on for miles. But North Georgia? Oh, these mountain trails humble me! They kick my butt, and yet, every time I walk them, I feel a bit stronger. I wasn’t focused on the scale; I just wanted to feel better and play with my grandkids without feeling out of breath!
Now, here we are, twelve months later. Do I feel better? Absolutely. Do I have more energy? You bet! Am I exactly where I want to be? Not quite, but I’m closer than I was a year ago, and that’s something to be proud of. As I start thinking about my 2025 goals, I know it’s time to add a little weight training into the mix!
If you have any tips or want to share what keeps you going, I’d love to hear from you. Your stories inspire me, just like my grandkids do! I always look forward to reading the messages you send, and it’s so motivating to hear other perspectives on this health journey.
Speaking of inspiration—we had the best time this week with Rory, the astronaut, and Aiden, the Tigah! It’s amazing how much love for family can push us to keep growing and evolving.
With all my heart,
Isabel
