Living in Florida, Fall is more a state of mind than a season. That doesn’t stop me from going wild for Fall flavors, of course! From pumpkin pie cookies and pumpkin dump cake to this amazing pumpkin butter recipe, there is so much to love about the season.
Not only is my recipe for pumpkin butter easy, fast, and super tasty, but it will make the whole house smell like pumpkin pie. That might be my favorite part!
It’s great on everything. I’m serious! Spread it on toast, stir a spoonful into your coffee, or even use it as a topping for ice cream. You can’t go wrong!
What is pumpkin butter?
If you’ve never had pumpkin butter before and are curious about what it really is, I’m here to tell you you need to give it a try! Pumpkin butter is essentially a mix of pumpkin puree with pumpkin pie spice flavors and additional add-ins like apple juice or maple syrup to round out the flavor and thin it out. It’s similar to apple butter, with a creamy, spreadable consistency.
What makes this pumpkin butter recipe so good?
- It’s super creamy: This creamy pumpkin butter has the perfect consistency.
- It’s so flavorful: If you love the flavors of pumpkin pie spice, you are going to adore this pumpkin butter recipe. To top it all off, I mix in a little apple juice. This really balances out the flavors with a slightly cider-like taste.
- It’s easy to make: You can make this simple homemade recipe for pumpkin butter in around 35 minutes, and let me tell you, it will last you a while. You can make it ahead and freeze it in an ice cube tray to store in portions for whenever you want some tasty pumpkin spice flavor!
- It goes with everything: Dollop it onto ice cream, spread it on toast, mix it into coffee (I’m serious, try this!) or use it as a cookie filling. There are so many ways to enjoy this recipe!
Pumpkin Butter Ingredients
- Pumpkin Puree: Make sure to use 100% pure pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling. You can buy it canned or puree your own pumpkin. If you puree your own, use a sweet baking pumpkin and not the kind you would carve.
- Apple Juice: Use a high-quality apple juice for the best flavor. You could also use a cider. It’s up to you!
- Pumpkin Spices: We’re mixing ground ginger, ground cloves, ground nutmeg, and cinnamon to create the pumpkin spice mixture that flavors the pumpkin butter. I also have a pumpkin pie spice recipe, if you want to make some ahead and store it in a jar.
- Sugar: I’m using white granulated sugar. You could also use brown sugar, though!

Pumpkin Butter Recipes FAQ
Yes, you can and should freeze leftover pumpkin puree and pumpkin butter! As it only contains freezer-safe ingredients and defrosts without texture change, freezing leftovers is a great way to avoid waste. Freeze leftovers in small portions using an ice cube tray!
Pumpkin puree and pumpkin butter last four days in the fridge. Due to this short lifespan, it’s a great idea to freeze anything you’re not expecting to use quickly. I highly recommend portioning leftovers out in an ice cube tray, then storing the frozen cubes in a bag for easy thawing later!
Pumpkin butter is essentially made from the same ingredients as pumpkin pie filling, and tastes the same! It’s got a mild pumpkin flavor with a delicious spicy sweetness brought in by warming autumn spices.
