Steak Foil Packs
When you need a filling but quick and easy dinner, steak foil packs are the way to go! My steak foil packet recipe is simple to make, but super flavorful. You won't need much to make them - just foil, a knife and cutting board, and a pot on the stove or microwave-safe bowl to parboil the potatoes. Both the cooking process and cleanup are as easy as can be!
Made as written, easy week night dinner. Good flavor. Leftovers served in a rice bowl. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
Steak Foil Pack Ingredients
- Steak: The best steak cuts for steak foil packets are top sirloin steak or ribeye, as both have good marbling and natural flavor. However, you can use whichever cut of steak you like. If you use a tougher cut like chuck steak, just be sure to marinate it first to tenderize the steak.
- Potatoes: You can use any variety of potato you prefer, such as Yukon Gold, russet potatoes, or red potatoes. They should all be cut to roughly the same size to ensure they cook evenly. It isn't necessary to peel the potatoes unless you want to, but be sure to give them a good scrub if you don't peel them.
- Red Pepper: My family prefers red bell peppers for this recipe, but you can use any color bell pepper you want, or even use a mix. Green, yellow, and orange bell peppers all work well, too.
- Onion: I recommend using yellow or white onions and not red onions for this recipe. Red onions have too strong of a flavor for foil pack steak.
- Olive Oil: Extra virgin olive oil or light olive oil both work well. I love the robust flavor of olive oil for this dish, but you can also use a more neutral oil like avocado oil.
- Garlic: I'm using crushed garlic cloves, but you can also use garlic powder or garlic paste.
- Seasoning: A mix of paprika, thyme, salt, and pepper forms the seasoning. I recommend using sea salt flakes or kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper if possible. Alternatively, use your favorite seasoning for steak and potatoes. I love using my lemon pepper seasoning or my steak seasoning recipe.
- Lemon Juice: A little bit of lemon is the perfect complement to steak foil packs.

Notes
- You can use your oven or the grill to cook steak foil packs. Make sure to preheat the oven if you're using your oven.
- Check the temperature of the steak bits with an instant read meat thermometer using my steak temperature chart to find your ideal degree of doneness.
- Use enough water to cover the potatoes when parboiling them. Parboiling just refers to partially cooking the potatoes. Depending on how you cook the steak foil packs, you might be able to skip this step. Make the recipe the first time by parboiling the potatoes to see how done they are according to your tastes.

How to Make Steak Foil Packs with Step-by-Step Photos
Step 1: Cut steak into evenly-sized 2-inch pieces. Dice potatoes, peppers, and onions into 1-inch pieces or smaller, keeping them all around the same size so they cook evenly.
Step 2: Add the potatoes to a pot of boiling water on the stove or to a microwave-safe dish filled with water. Cook for 5 minutes on the stove, or 2 minutes in the microwave. This will partially cook the potatoes to ensure they cook all of the way through when roasting in the steak foil packs.
Step 3: Mix oil, garlic, paprika, thyme, salt, pepper, and lemon juice in a bowl until completely combined. Toss the steak, peppers, onions, and potatoes in the oil mixture to coat all pieces evenly.
Step 4: Cut foil squares large enough to contain and fold over the steak and potatoes mixture. Divide the steak and potatoes evenly between the foil packs. Seal up the foil packs.
Step 5: Cook the foil packs on the grill for 10 minutes, or in a preheated oven at 425°F for around 20 minutes. When done, open the pack and finish the steak by searing it on the grill for a couple of minutes just to brown it, or place it under the oven broiler for a few minutes to sear.

What to Serve with Steak Foil Packs
Storing Leftovers
Store leftover steak foil packs in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Gently reheat in the oven or air fryer, or on the stove.
FAQ
Yes! To air fry steak foil packs, cook for about 25-30 min at 400°F in a preheated air fryer. Check doneness with a meat thermometer, as all air fryers are different and may require more or less cooking time.
The beauty of foil packet steak is that you can add any of your favorite veggies for steak in the foil packs, like mushrooms, broccoli, or even chopped asparagus. Get creative and experiment with what you add to your foil packs. I love to add garlic butter mushrooms.

This recipe was quite good, but I skipped the step of pre cooking the potatoes and just added them straight to the foil pack at the begining and they were cooked just fine.
Very good dish, thanks for the recipe.
