Sweet Potato Fry Sauce
The perfect sweet potato fries are defined by the perfect fry dipping sauce! It's all about the blend of sweet, tender sweet potato and cold, creamy, tangy and spicy dipping sauce. Today's recipe is just that: the perfect sweet potato dipping sauce for a dip so delicious, you'll need to double up on sweet potato fries!
Unlike my fry sauce recipe, which uses mayo for a rich base, this sweet potato fry sauce uses sour cream or Greek yogurt to create a tangy base. This tangy base is perfect for pairing with sweet potato, as the natural sweetness of the potato balances it all out!
Tools to Make Sweet Potato Fry Dipping Sauce
- A mixing bowl - or mix it right in a storage container!
- A whisk or spoon!
That's it! No cooking or blending required.
Ingredients in Sweet Potato Dipping Sauce
- Sour cream: You can also use unsweetened plain Greek Yogurt. For a less tangy, savory dip, you can use mayonnaise.
- Sriracha: I like a bit of spice in my sweet potato fry sauce to counter the sweetness. You can also use cayenne pepper or hot sauce.
- Paprika: Paprika has a great sweet and earthy flavor, but you can use chipotle powder for more spice, or smoked paprika for a smoky twist. In a pinch, chili powder or cayenne will work, too.
- Garlic powder: Always use powdered garlic in dip- using fresh overpowers all the rest of the flavors.
- Onion powder: Much like garlic powder, onion powder is preferable to fresh onion, which is too strong.
- Salt and pepper: To taste. I like lots of pepper!

Tips for Making Sweet Potato Fry Dip
- If your sour cream is especially thick, you can add a splash of milk or water to help thin out the sauce. This is especially helpful if your sweet potato fries are thin and break easily.
- You can swap out the flavor profiles by using curry powder instead of the paprika, adding in a little cilantro and lime juice, or mixing in a dollop of honey mustard! Keep adjusting until it's exactly to your tastes.
- While this sauce is made as a fry dip, you can absolutely use it on any sweet potato recipe. I've linked a bunch of my favorites below.
- Like most sauces using dried spices, it gets better with rest! Try making it a few hours ahead of time so the flavors can meld.
Sweet Potato Fry Dip Storage
- Refrigerator: You can store this dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. As it's very fast to make, I recommend making up just enough for your meal a day before serving it.
- Freezer: I don't recommend freezing this sauce, as the sour cream clumps up and doesn't thaw out well.
FAQ
Just about anything! You can use this dip for potato wedges, sandwiches, and burgers or even use it as a replacement for ranch to dip veggie slices in. I also love dipping my potato chips in it! It's a well balanced dip with a great flavor.
Due to the way sour cream can clump up and curdle when heated, I don't recommend adding this sauce to anything you'll bake in the oven. Instead, add his sauce at the end once the food is fully cooked.
