If you know anything about me, you know how much I love dinner with friends. One of my favorite things to do is host a get-together with a snack bar for brunch, and nothing could be more perfect for that than an avocado toast bar.
Mashed or sliced avocados on toast, with simple seasoning. And, don't get me wrong, that's a great way to enjoy it, but you have more options! Try these variations, and you will see the real appeal of this versatile, easy recipe. You may even be inspired to come up with your own toppings!
What is avocado toast?
In its simplest form, this recipe consists of sliced toasted bread spread with mashed avocados seasoned with salt and pepper. Some recipes add a squeeze of citrus or may add other toppings or spreads, like cream cheese.
The best part about is you can make the toast however you like. It’s fun to experiment and come up with new flavor combinations!

How to Make Avocado Toast
Grated Egg
- Begin by toasting a slice of bread. While your bread is toasting, mash avocado in a separate dish until desired smoothness.
- Spread mashed avocado onto the toasted slice of bread. Top with flaky salt, to taste.
- Using a cheese grater, grate a hard-boiled egg over the top.
- Top with a drizzle of Mike's hot honey. Slice and enjoy!
Kylie Jenner Toast
- Begin by toasting a slice of bread. While your bread is toasting, mash avocado in a separate dish until desired smoothness.
- Spread mashed avocado onto the toasted slice of bread. Top with crushed red pepper flakes.
- Drizzle with honey and top with flaky salt. Slice and enjoy!
Everything Bagel
- Toast a slice of bread. While your bread is toasting, slice your avocado thinly.
- Once the bread is toasted, spread a thin layer of cream cheese overtop.
- Layer with thinly sliced avocado slices.
- Season with everything bagel seasoning. Slice and enjoy!
Caprese Toast
- Begin by toasting a slice of bread. While your bread is toasting, mash avocado in a separate dish until desired smoothness.
- Spread mashed avocado onto the toasted slice of bread.
- In a separate bowl combine grape tomatoes, mozzarella balls, balsamic vinegar, basil, and flaky salt.
- Pour over the top of your toast. Drizzle with balsamic glaze. Slice and enjoy!
Hash Brown with Avocado
- Cook frozen hashbrown patty according to the package. While your hashbrown is cooking, slice your avocado very thin.
- Once your hashbrown is done, top it with thinly sliced avocado slices.
- Drizzle with chili oil and season with flaky salt and pepper.
Avocado Toast with Egg
- Begin by toasting a slice of bread. While your bread is toasting, mash avocado in a separate dish until desired smoothness.
- Spread mashed avocado onto the toasted slice of bread. Top with chili oil and flaky salt.
- Cook an over-easy egg and place it on top of your toast.
- Season with pepper. Slice and enjoy!

- Try mixing and matching your favorite toppings. You will find new favorite combinations this way! A few more combinations I like are…
- Strawberry slices, sunflower seeds or nuts, and feta cheese
- Smoked lox salmon, cream cheese spread, pickled red onions or capers, and everything bagel seasoning
- Fresh pico de gallo is another amazing topping! Use a little lime juice and cilantro for a pico de gallo avo toast.
- Bacon, jalapeño, and goat cheese or manchego
- Firm avocados last about 2 weeks in the refrigerator. If you need them to be a bit softer to use, add them to a brown paper bag on the counter for a day or two. You want avocados that are not too firm, and not too mushy for avo toast.
- You can also use a fried egg instead of an over-easy egg if you prefer for the egg toast.
- Fresh herbs can add an amazing flavor to your toast recipes, like fresh basil for the Caprese toast.
- A pinch of salt makes all the difference. I recommend using flaky sea salt rather than table salt for the taste and texture it adds.
- You can make it gluten-free simply by using gluten-free bread.
Best Bread for Avocado Toast
The best bread is whole grain, though whole wheat bread, sprouted grain bread, sourdough bread, rye, and sunflower bread are also great choices. If you're hosting an event, including a few different options to serve a large group of people. As a tip, toast your bread just before serving so it’s nice and fresh.
