Using Leftover Steak
My family and I are all foodies, but we don’t always agree on what we want for dinner. I’m sure you know what I mean. If there’s one thing I can count on everyone wanting, though, it’s steak for dinner!
Whenever I cook steak, whether it’s grilled, smoked, pan-fried, air fried, or reverse seared in the oven (can you tell I cook a lot of steak?), I always like to make a little extra for steak leftovers we can enjoy during the week.
Ron’s favorite might be a toss up between my recipe for steak nachos and Philly cheesesteak sliders, but I personally love my steak alfredo more than anything else. Please let me know your favorite leftover steak recipe in the comments!

Recipes for Leftover Steak FAQ
There are plenty of ways to cook leftover steak, but one thing you should keep in mind with all of your leftover steak recipes is the timing of the recipe. Recipes calling for fresh steak may require less time to cook using leftovers, so to avoid overcooking your steak, make sure to keep an eye on it when reheating.
There isn’t much you can do to tenderize cooked steak once it’s tough. But, slicing the steak extra thin and serving it with a sauce or on a sandwich works very well for using tough steak. My suggestion is to make my steak alfredo (featured above) if you have a tough leftover steak you want to repurpose, or replacing the pork in my Philly sandwich with thin steak slices.
Leftover cooked steak will last for up to 3-4 days in the refrigerator when kept in an airtight container. If you want to reheat the steak without adding it to a new dish, the best way is to reheat it slowly in the oven at a low temperature to avoid overcooking it.
Tips for Cooking Leftover Steak
- Be careful not to overcook your steak. To avoid doing this, don’t reheat the steak at too high of a temperature. Instead, allow it to reheat slowly at a lower temperature until heated through. This gives you more control over the temp. Use a meat thermometer to keep track of the internal temperature when reheating so you know when it’s done.
- Slicing steak thinly helps with tenderizing it. If you have tough steak leftovers, try slicing them extra thinly against the grain. See my guide to tenderizing beef for more tips!
- Get creative and use your steak leftovers as a substitute in your favorite recipes. You can make everything from the recipes I shared above, to lettuce wraps, rice bowls, salads, and more. I love swapping out the grilled chicken in my buttermilk ranch salad with steak leftovers.
