Steak and Potatoes Skillet
What could be more classic than steak and potatoes? They’re a perfect match: rich, flavorful steak combined with crispy potatoes that soak up all those juices for a delicious and hearty meal.
The only way to make steak and potatoes for dinner even better is to make it easier. My one-pan steak and potatoes might just be the easiest steak dinner recipe out there!
Using simple ingredients that do the work for you (seriously, Worcestershire sauce is a perfect marinade on its own), this skillet steak recipe comes together in no time for perfectly cooked, perfectly tender steak and crispy, flavorful potatoes.
Why You’ll Love My Steak and Potatoes
- It’s fast: It takes under an hour to prepare these garlic butter steak and potatoes!
- There’s no mess: The only pan you need is a cast iron skillet, making for fewer dishes and easier cleanup!
- You can customize it: Add in sliced onions, fresh herbs, or use a marinade to make the steak even more flavorful. This easy steak and potatoes recipe will work with everything!
- It’s easy: One pan, and barely any prep? This is a weeknight steak dinner you’ll be coming back to!
One Pan Steak and Potatoes Ingredients
- Steak: I like to use New York Strip steak, but any fairly lean, tender cut will work great! I’ve also used top sirloin steak and ribeye and both have worked well.
- Potatoes: Use your potatoes of choice. I find that Yukon Gold potatoes cook the best, but you can use fingerling potatoes, red potatoes, or Russet potatoes too.
- Worcestershire Sauce: A must-have with steak! This complex sauce will add tons of flavor.
- Steak Seasoning: You can use your favorite mix (I always like Montreal steak seasoning!), but my favorite is my homemade Steak Rub! It’s perfect for cooking steak.
- Butter: You can use regular butter for this, but I highly recommend a good compound butter! Try my garlic herb butter for steak, or make it extra luxurious with Truffle Butter.
How to Cook Steak and Potatoes On the Stove
1: Marinate Steak
30 minutes before cooking, remove the steak from the refrigerator and slice it into 1-inch cubes. Place the cubes in a bowl or bag and pour the Worcestershire sauce over them to marinate.
2: Cube the Potatoes
While the steak is marinating, wash and cube the potatoes into 1-inch cubes. I don’t generally peel them. If you’re using russet potatoes, soak the cubes in cold water while the steak is marinating.
3: Heat Skillet
Place a large skillet (ideally cast iron, but any will work) over medium high heat, and add in half the butter to melt.
4: Sear steak
Remove the steak from the marinade, and sprinkle thoroughly with half of the seasoning. Place on the pan, making sure not to overcrowd the pan, and sear for 2 minutes per side. Remove to a plate to rest.
5: Cook the Potatoes
Add the remaining butter to the pan, and then add the potatoes. Season with the rest of the steak seasoning, then cook for 15 minutes or until fork tender.
2: Add Steak and Serve
Return the steak to the pan and stir until the steak is sizzling hot again, then serve and enjoy!

Garlic Butter Steak and Potatoes Skillet Recipe Tips
- Feel free to adjust the marinade to your tastes! Worcestershire sauce alone is plenty flavorful, but you can also add olive oil, soy sauce, or your favorite steak sauce.
- I highly recommend using a compound butter like my Garlic Butter instead of plain butter! Fresh garlic is an incredible addition; who doesn’t like garlic steak and potatoes? To make your own simple compound butter, just mix some fresh herbs into the butter such as rosemary, thyme, and oregano. But I recommend checking out my recipe for more ideas!
- While you can use any pan for this, a cast iron skillet is by far the ideal. Cast iron will do the best job searing the steak and capturing the flavors of the dish.
- Once you’ve served the steak and potatoes, you can splash a little red wine and chicken broth in the pan to de-glaze it and use it as a quick and easy sauce!
Isabel’s Top Tip
Make your own seasoning! I love a good Montreal or homemade seasoning mix, especially my Steak Seasoning. But in a pinch, you can make your own by mixing together salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, and
Storing Steak Bites and Potatoes
- Refrigerator: Cooked leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
- Freezer: You can freeze cooked steak and potatoes for up to 3 months. I like to freeze them in a plastic bag and shake them up a few times so they don’t stick together in storage.
- Reheating: Thaw frozen steak and potatoes in the fridge overnight; they can overcook easily if cooked from frozen! Once thawed, toss the steak and potatoes in a skillet over medium-high heat with a little extra butter and heat until sizzling and warmed through. I don’t recommend the microwave, as it does a poor job reheating potatoes!
Steak and Potatoes Recipe FAQ
Due to the short cook time, I recommend a nice, tender cut of steak like top sirloin, ribeye, New York cut, or beef tenderloin. Flank steak can be used, but be sure to cut it into thin slices instead of chunks, as it can be tougher.
I like changing up steak and potatoes by adding in thickly sliced onions, green bell pepper, or using baby potatoes instead of cubed potatoes.
Cook the steak before cooking the potatoes for the best results. The potatoes will soak up the fatty drippings from the steak bites and become even more flavorful!
Absolutely. Using the ingredients in this recipe, first parboil the potatoes for 5 minutes on the stove, then wrap everything together in foil and bake in a preheated oven at 425°F for approximately 20 minutes. I recommend you add a little olive oil. For full instructions, see my recipe for foil pack steak in the oven.
