Mayo and Mustard Sauce
If there’s one food I never get tired of, it’s a good deli sandwich. Whenever I travel up north, there are a handful of delicatessens I know I’m going to need to stop by and indulge in. What makes these sandwiches so special, though? There are a lot of factors, but the number one for me is usually the sauce!
One of my favorite sauces for sandwiches (and hotdogs, and burgers, and more…) is mayo mustard sauce. My recipe for mayo and mustard sauce is sort of like a dijonnaise, but with a couple of extra ingredients added that really take it over the top and make it a game-changer for any meal.
It’s perfect if you’re looking for a tasty twist for your sandwiches, or just about any meal. I’ve served it with everything from a classic sandwich to sliced chorizo for dipping, pork chops, breaded chicken, and more. You really can’t go wrong with this sauce, so let me show you how to make it!
Mayo Mustard Ingredients
- Mayonnaise: Use a high-quality mayonnaise that you love. If you want your dijonnaise to be a little bit sweeter, use Japanese mayo. It’s sweeter than American mayonnaise and amazingly smooth. I like Kewpie brand.
- Yellow Mustard: You can use your preferred yellow mustard. I usually pick up store brand yellow mustard.
- Dijon Mustard: Dijon mustard and mayo are the perfect pair. It adds a nice kick of spice to the sauce without being overpowering. You can also use other similar mustards, like sweet mustards (Bavarian or Honeycup, for example) or German mustards like Koops’ Dusseldorf Mustard. I would recommend avoiding stone ground mustard as this is a grainy type mustard that will make your sauce grainy, too, but if it’s all you have, it will achieve a similar flavor.
- Worcestershire Sauce: This is the secret ingredient that really brings this sauce together. Worcestershire has an amazing flavor that blends so well with mayo mustard sauce and adds a ton of depth.
Pork Chop Sauces
This is one of my favorite sauces for pork chops. Try my other favorites, too!
How to Make Mayo Mustard Sauce
1: Add Ingredients to a Bowl
Add all of your ingredients to a shallow dish or bowl.
2: Mix Thoroughly
Mix until well-blended and creamy. If the sauce looks like it might become a little bit grainy from the Worcestershire sauce, don’t worry. Mix it well enough and it will be the perfect creamy consistency.
Isabel’s Top Tip
After mixing, I recommend refrigerating for at least 30 minutes before using it in any way you please. This helps the flavors meld together!

Storing Dijon Mayonnaise Sauce
Add the sauce to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator. Label the container with the date so you can keep track of its shelf life, and use within 1 week. Before reusing, give the sauce a good stir to mix any separation that may have occurred!
Tips for Making Mayonnaise and Mustard Sauce
- Use high-quality mayonnaise. Because this is such a simple sauce, using a high-quality mayo will really make a difference.
- Experiment with different mustards. Yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, whole grain mustard, or honey mustard can each give your sauce a unique twist. Just keep in mind that whole grain mustard or stone ground mustard, for example, will add a bit of a grainy texture (but they are delicious).
- Adjust to your preferred taste. Add more mustard for tanginess or more mayo for creaminess, depending on your preference. You can also use a sweeter mayo or mustard to adjust the sweetness level.
- Chill before serving. Letting the sauce sit in the fridge allows the flavors to meld together beautifully, so definitely don’t skip this step! It only takes 30 minutes.
- Add a personal touch! Consider stirring in a pinch of sea salt, garlic powder, black pepper, smoked paprika, red pepper flakes, dill, chopped pickles, fresh lemon juice, hot sauce, or honey for extra depth of flavor. You can really get creative with it.
FAQ
Yes, absolutely. Keep in mind this will change the flavor depending on what type of mustard you use, but that’s a great way to experiment. I’ve used honey mustard instead of Dijon, and really love the flavor. Use whatever you have on hand or like best, and enjoy!
I would recommend using a full fat mayo for this sauce, but you can absolutely try it with olive oil mayo or avocado oil mayo and see how you feel about it. It’s worth experimenting to see what works best for you.
No, they are different. Mayo and mustard sauce typically is a simple combination of mayonnaise and mustard with a couple of other ingredients, in the case of some recipes (including mine). Remoulade sauce generally has many more ingredients. See my remoulade sauce recipe!
What to Pair with Mustard Mayonnaise
- Grilled Meats: Perfect with grilled chicken breasts, grilled chuck steak, or grilled pork chops! My family loves it with chicken tenders, too.
- Fish and Seafood: Drizzle over grilled or baked fish, air fryer shrimp, and crab cakes for a delicious twist.
- Sandwiches and Wraps: Use it as a sandwich spread on pork chop sandwiches, wraps, and paninis.
- Fresh Vegetables: Use it as a dressing for steamed or grilled veggies, or as a dip for a fresh veggie platter. I love it with Air Fryer Asparagus Fries.
- Salads: Elevate potato salad, pasta salad, or green salads by using it as a creamy dressing.
- Fries and Chips: Dip french fries, sweet potato fries, potato chips, onion rings, or soft pretzels for a satisfying snack.
- Hamburgers and Hot Dogs: Slather on burgers, like my Fried Egg Burger, for a gourmet touch! It’s great with hot dogs, too.
- Eggs: Enhance deviled eggs and egg salads, or use as a topping for hard-boiled eggs.
- Tacos and Quesadillas: A great addition to fish tacos, steak quesadillas, and other Tex-Mex favorites.

Absolutely delicious. I cut the recipe in half for just the two of us. I used my homemade mayonnaise rather than purchased. It’s just an oil, egg, tad of lemon juice and mustard combo. Other than my mayo, I followed your directions exactly. We used on angus beef grilled hamburgers.
