    Sheet Pan Nachos

I love baked nachos! What could be easier than a sheet pan of chips, cheese, and steak, covered with nachos toppings, like salsa, guacamole, and sour cream?

A spicy beef nachos recipe like this is one of my favorite dinners to make for game day or movie night. My kids and their friends love these spicy nachos, and so do I!

The best part about making these baked nachos is you can use leftover steak. It is so much fun to cook up a delicious steak dinner the night before, then use the leftovers to make nachos the next day for lunch or dinner. This is one of my family’s favorite leftover steak recipes, and I know yours will love it, too!

    FAQ

What’s the best cheese for nachos?

A shredded creamy cheese that melts well makes the best cheese for nachos. Use shredded Monterey Jack, cheddar, or a Mexican cheese blend according to your preference.

What are the best nachos chips?

The best chips for nachos are regular tortilla chips you would enjoy on their own. Choose your favorite tortilla chip brand and use those. You could even use Doritos to make Doritos nachos! Bigger chips work better for making nachos.

What steak should I use for nachos steak?

Grilled Chuck Steak works perfectly for making steak nachos, but you can use leftover steak from any recipe of your choosing, such as Garlic Butter Steak Bites, Reverse Sear Ribeye Steak, Carne Asada, and Porterhouse Steak.

What’s the best salsa for nachos?

The best salsa for nachos is a salsa you would normally enjoy with plain tortilla chips. Pick your favorite salsa to use with this beef nachos recipe, and you cannot go wrong. I recommend a mild or spicy salsa to pair well with the steak.

    Steak Nacho Ingredients

    • hot sauce
    • olive oil
    • minced garlic
    • lime juice
    • sea salt
    • chuck steak
    • tortilla chips
    • shredded Monterey Jack cheese
    • shredded lettuce
    • tomatoes
    • sour cream
    • salsa

This is a great recipe to use with leftovers – you can even use leftover prime rib! I have made prime rib nachos with leftovers following this recipe, and everyone loved them.

Steak nachos ingredients on a table

    Nacho Toppings

    • Mexican crema, which is like sour cream or Creme Fraiche
    • Jalapenos
    • Olives
    • Avocado
    • Shrimp for surf & turf nachos
    • Cilantro
    • Peppers, like Blistered Shishito Peppers

Jalapenos will add a little more spice, while avocado will tone down the heat and olives will add another layer of flavor. Mix things up by adding shrimp from Shrimp Scampi or Garlic Prawns to your nachos to make it a surf and turf.

Peppers add another level of flavor alongside steak, and my favorite are blistered shishito peppers. They’re a mild Japanese flavor with a ton of flavor! Give it a try!

How to Make Nachos with Steak

Follow a few simple steps to make the best steak nachos ever. Use leftover steak, or marinate and grill steak from scratch! Once the steak is ready, all you have to do is assemble the nachos with your preferred toppings and serve.

    Marinating Steak for Nachos

    1. In a small bowl, combine hot sauce, olive oil, lime juice, minced garlic, and sea salt. Place chuck steak in a resealable plastic bag, then pour the mixture into the bag with the steak.
    2. Turn it over in your hands a few times, massaging the marinade into the steak through the bag. Refrigerate and allow the steak to marinate for at least 2 hours, but less than 8.

    Grilling Steak for Nachos

    1. After marinating for at least 2 hours, preheat your grill or stove to high heat. Remove steak from the marinade bag and place it on the heated grill or cast iron skillet on the stove.
    2. Cook 8 minutes on one side, then flip and cook another 5-8 minutes until you reach your desired degree of doneness. Check my Beef Temperature Chart and use a meat thermometer to pull your steak off of the heat 5 degrees below your desired doneness.
    3. Remove the steak from the heat and allow to rest for 5 minutes before thinly slicing against the grain using a sharp knife.

    How to Serve Steak Nachos

    1. Preheat your oven broiler to high heat. Spray a baking sheet lightly with cooking spray, then spread your tortilla chips in an even layer on the sheet.
    2. Lay slices of steak over the tortilla chips as evenly as possible. Sprinkle with shredded cheese and place the pan in the oven until the cheese melts and the chips crisp up, 3-4 minutes.
    3. Top with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, salsa, guacamole, sour cream, cilantro, and any other toppings of your choosing!

    Tips for the Best Nachos

    • Red and green salsa both work well. For steak nachos with more Mexican cuisine flair, try green tomatillo salsa with carne asada steak. Top with a creamy cheese and extra Mexican cheese, like queso fresco or cotija. This combination is so yummy!
    • Prepare your steak ahead of time to save time making steak nachos. I always prefer to make the steak the day before I know I want to make nachos so it’s just a matter of minutes to prepare it. Steak nachos are a great way to repurpose restaurant steak leftovers, too.
    • Try making these nachos using other leftover protein, like ground beef, chicken, or pork! Pulled Pork Nachos are incredible.
    • If you don’t think all of the nachos will be eaten, I recommend letting each individual person add their toppings to their plates rather than adding them yourself. The cold toppings ingredients will not heat well for leftovers.
