Burgers in the Air Fryer
I have always thought grilling burgers is the only way to cook a perfect burger, from poached egg burgers to mushroom swiss burgers and even bison burgers.
Then I tried air frying burgers. Oh my gosh. If you haven’t air fried burgers yet and you’re a burger-lover like me, you have to try my recipe – it will change your life!
Of all of the homemade burgers I’ve made, this garlic butter burger in the air fryer is easily in my top 5. It’s juicy, flavorful, and best of all, super easy without any fuss. I have a hard time convincing myself I don’t need burgers for dinner again, with how easy it is to air fry burgers! (Isn’t that craving so hard to ignore?)
Air Fried Hamburgers Ingredients
- Ground Beef: I’m using an 80/20 ground chuck mix for my burgers. Although you can use leaner meat if you like, the level of fat in 80/20 ground chuck is ideal for making a juicy burger.
- Salt: Kosher salt or sea salt flakes is the way to go. Avoid table salt.
- Garlic Powder: This will add a slight garlicky flavor to the patties without any chance of burning in the air fryer.
- Black Pepper: Freshly cracked black pepper tends to taste the best, but you can pre-ground and it will still work perfectly.
- Burger Buns: I personally prefer brioche buns and recommend giving them a try, but you can use your favorite hamburger buns.
- Garlic Butter: I’m making garlic butter burgers in the air fryer using my recipe for garlic compound butter. You can, of course, use any other toppings you prefer, including cheese. I’ll have some notes on that below.
Isabel’s Air Fryer
It’s amazing what you can cook with an air fryer! I love mine and highly recommend it. It even has a steaming function to re-hydrate stale bread!

Air Fryer Hamburger Toppings
- Garlic Butter: As stated above, I love making garlic butter spread to top off these burgers. It’s garlicky, herby, and beautifully complements the natural flavor of the beef while adding juiciness from the butter. SO good!
- Cheese: If you want to make air fryer cheeseburgers, feel free to add a slice of cheese to yours. I recommend opening the air fryer basket in the last minute of cook time, placing the cheese over top the patties, then closing the basket to finish cooking. This will melt the cheese without any risk of burning it. Try cheddar, colby jack, swiss, or pepper jack cheese depending on your taste preferences.
- Mushrooms and Onions: If you know me, you know my favorite burger of all time is my mushroom swiss burger. It’s my most popular burger recipe for a reason. You can make it in the air fryer by preparing yourself a batch of caramelized mushrooms and onions ahead of time. They store well, and you can even freeze them!
- Pickled Onions: For a twist with a vinegary kick, try using my recipe for pickled onions to top off these burgers. You can use them to make banh mi inspired burgers with thinly sliced cucumbers, jalapenos, and shredded carrots, or pair them with candied bacon for the most luxurious bacon burger ever.
- Lettuce, Onion, Tomato: The classic pairing. You just can’t beat lettuce, onions, and tomato on a burger. Try pairing it with your favorite cheese and my spicy fry sauce.
These are just a few suggestions. Top your air fryer burgers with your favorite hamburger toppings! I kept mine a simple garlic burger with garlic butter spread, lettuce, and tomato. Avocado is a great choice, too.
Love burgers? Definitely don’t miss out on my Juicy Lucy cheeseburgers.
How to Cook Hamburgers in an Air Fryer
Mix the Burger Patties
Place 1 lb. ground beef (80/20) in a large bowl, then add ½ tsp. each of salt, garlic powder, and onion powder, with ¼ tsp. black pepper and 1 ½ tsp. Worcestershire sauce. You can also use my favorite Burger Seasoning.
Form the Patties
Using your hands, combine the hamburger mixture. Separate the ground beef mixture into 4 equal balls. Form each ball into a patty.
Place Burgers in the Air Fryer
Heat air fryer to 360°F. Place the burgers into the air fryer, making sure to leave enough space between each hamburger patty so they cook properly.
Air Fry Burgers
Air fry for 7 minutes on each side for medium, flipping the burger halfway through. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature.
Serve and Enjoy
If using, top each burger with 1 Tablespoon of garlic butter spread. Enjoy on buns of your choice. I recommend brioche!
Tips for Air Frying Burgers
- Always preheat your air fryer prior to cooking. This ensures your burgers cook evenly throughout and develop a crispy exterior.
- The cooking time may vary slightly depending on your air fryer model, and also the thickness of your burgers. Test out your air fryer, you may need to adjust a minute or two. Air fryers with trays tend to take longer to cook than basket models.
- Everyone loves cheese on their burgers, right? If you’re a cheese lover, add your cheese immediately after the burger comes off the air fryer, or in the last minute of cook time. No sooner than that or it will create a mess!
- Do not overcrowd your air fryer. It is best to air fry in batches so you get the crispy on the outside and soft on the inside perfection we are looking for. I love my 10-Quart Air Fryer for this recipe!
- Any burger recipe you love will work in the air fryer, but keep in mind cook times for other meats such as turkey or chicken will take longer than beef burgers. Always use a meat thermometer to check the temp. Try topping air fryer burgers with BBQ hamburger toppings, or making my wagyu beef burger in the air fryer for a truly gourmet treat!
- You can make my Juicy Turkey Burgers in the air fryer, too! Just increase the cook time for turkey.
Side Dishes for Burgers
Another great choice is a simple green salad or tomato salad. And of course, potato salad is an excellent choice, too! I have Spanish potato salad and German potato salad varieties that go great with this simple burger recipe.

Yes!! Let us know how you like it. This is one of my favorites!
Ryan says
Did you place the burgers in a rack inside the air fryer or use any parchment paper beneath the meat?
Em Beitel says
Hi Ryan! No need for parchment paper – we played them in the air fryer without any liners. If you have an air fryer with trays, set the burgers onto the trays and place in the air fryer as is. If you have an air fryer with a pull out drawer, do the same and don’t use any liners. Thank you for your question and I hope this helps!

I’m already in love with with this recipe! Can’t wait to try it! I was just wondering how long it would take to cook these yummy burgers until well done? I would really appreciate any advice you could offer, this would be my first time making them. Thank you so very much.
Isabel Laessig says
Hi Frances! I hope you enjoy them, and thank you for your lovely comment! You’ll want to cook the burger to 150-155°F internally. 7 minutes on each side will give you a medium burger, so for well done I would recommend around 8 to 9 minutes on each side, but I recommend you check with a meat thermometer just in case.
